Katherine Marques kmvbrandin3a20 — The Cultural History of Finland 1: Heaven and Earth Comparative Religion This really caught me off guard. I've been so used to nearly falling asleep with Finnish history, that a book which actually makes it quite interesting deserves my utmost respect. The prehistory part is still dry, but this time reading about it didn't feel like a chore. Granted, there is some repetition that could have been avoided with better editing, and the writing isn't as great as you would hope for from an ambitious project like this. It is, however, a great read for all Finns who want to know where this country stems from. The writers have also done a good job in focusing on the most essential topics. I had to read only about a half of this gigantic volume, but I think I'd be very inclined to finish this and read the other ones once I have the stomach to read a bit heavier non-fiction in my spare time again.

Manila Roeum manilaroeum — Karen Chance's 'Cassandra Palmer' series kicks off with this entertaining, but pretty confusing, installment. Cassie is a clairvoyant who was raised by Tony, a mafioso vampire, who used her talents for profit having had her parents killed to gain complete control of Cassie. When Cassie, as a teenager, learned of her parents fate she got her revenge by turning State's witness and letting human law punish Tony for his involvment in organised crime. As the series opens Cassie is in the witness protection program, but finds out her cover has been blown and needs to make a run for it...she doesn't get far before she's neck deep in supernatural problems.... In Cassie's 'world' there is a dizzying array of supernatural species - vampires, mages, fey, weres, clairvoyants and more. I spent the first half of the book very confused as Chance throws all of this, complete with interspecies politics, history, and at least a half dozen main characters at the reader in the first half of the book. As soon as she chucked time travel into the mix I was completely lost. For all the confusion it's a pretty decent read. There are some similarities to Laurell K Hamilton, but thus far only in the good sense. I'm going to read the others before I pass judgement on the series, I'm hoping that having gotten the series preliminaries out of the way the stories in the future volumes will make more sense.... I'd recommend this book, it's definately worth a look...

Baek Gabin _ — This was a decent novella.... short on emotions and sometimes Dory was so absurd in her carefulness. I get that she came from an abusive relationship and had trust issues, but she really flipped out on Clay a couple of times when he was just trying to be a good neighbor. Clay, as a hero, was done very well and Robyn Carr really made him irresistible to Dory and she eventually caved and gave into her attraction. I understand that the whole focus of this story was the issue of single mothers and women recovering from abuse, but sometimes the book got a little preachy in that respect.
