Arinze Walters _ — I'm just not sure what to make of this book. I definitely enjoyed it, though it took a little while to pull me in. There are 6 different stories within the novel, arranged in the structure: 1-2-3-4-5-6-5-4-3-2-1. The stories span a wide range of genres: historical journal, science fiction, and mystery, just to name a few. They move forward chronologically; the first story takes place in the 1840's, and the last two are in some distant future. Each story is connected to the one that follows, and they are all joined by a couple of factors. All in all, an interesting and entertaining read, but it does require some patience.

Cs Zhao _ — I had Jesse’s copy from home and he had bought another copy while in Cambridge. We read this together and managed to have several cool conversations both during and after our reading. What to say? Such gorgeous language. I think I’d been intimidated by this book, might have started it years ago and set it down. It was gripping from the first page. Stories within stories; endless twists and turns in the storyline. Noted frequent use of portmanteau words such as: his head backflung; while the slowspitting and squatting men watch her covertly; in a room lighted by a bugswirled kerosence lamp. Interesting use of repetition of specific words; intricate character development. Need to read more Faulkner! Connection of beginning to end. First paragraph: Sitting beside the road, watching the wagon mount the hill toward her, Lena thinks, ‘I have come from Alabama: a fur piece. All the way from Alabama a-walking. A fur piece.’ Thinking although I have not been quite a month on the road I am already in Mississippi, further from home than I have ever been before. I am now further from Doane’s Mill than I have been since I was twelve years old. The ending: “’Saulsbury, Tennessee’ and I looked back and saw her face. And it was like it was already fixed and waiting to be surprised, and that she knew that when the surprise come, she was going to enjoy it. And it did come and it did suit her. Because she said, “’My, my. A body does get around. Here we aint been coming from Alabama but two months, and now it’s already Tennessee.’”

Ana Sol _na_oldela_lave — O Rio Triste de Fernando Namora é um romance diferente de todos os que já li por me trazer uma realidade tipicamente portuguesa, tendo o Tejo como pano de fundo. A história passa-se ainda antes da Revolução de 25 de Abril de 1974, mas se não me fosse dada a data do desaparecimento da personagem principal e se não houvesse a presença das cartas de um soldado na Guerra Colonial, diria que se tinha passado nos dias de hoje. A acção principal gira em volta do desaparecimento de Rodrigo dos Santos Abrantes (a 14 de Novembro de 1965) e da reacção da sua família, bem como a vida de André, um escritor lisboeta. Além disso, mostra também como os jornais da época encaram um caso de desaparecimento, a rivalidade entre escritores, podemos ler cartas que a amante de André lhe enviava e as cartas de um soldado na Guerra Colonial em Angola. Escolhi este livro de entre uma pequena colecção que possuo e que tem títulos tais como: O Intruso de Mário Braga, A Paixão de Almeida Faria e Onde Cai a Sombra de Américo Guerreiro de Sousa. De momento, ainda não faço ideia se há elemento comum aos quatro livros, além de serem de autores portugueses. Voltando a O Rio Triste, posso dizer que não foi uma leitura desagradável, antes pelo contrário. Recomendaria a leitura deste livro a qualquer pessoa que goste de ler (de preferência muito, pois também não é completamente acessível, é preciso persistência).

赵 佳 15075206110f95a — I have always been susceptible to Ms. Butler's seductive style of writing. Her characters tend to start out in impossible situations and things generally don't get better, except in the ways they do. Dawn (like Bloodchild and, in another way, Kindred) is a morally nuanced examination of an unequal contact between people (and not-so-people) who can't hack it without each other. This is my first time reading any of the Xenogenesis books and I look forward to hunting down the next.

Keisha Solomon webdzynr — Next to Acheron, this was my favorite darkhunter/werehunter book yet. I couldn't put it down. Dev has been one of my favorite characters since he was introduced. And Samia is perfect for him! And I love the blend of both species. Great read!
