Karen Blanck karenblance8cd — I think this author could have had some creative fun with this topic - instead it is too serious - maybe she takes herself and life too seriously. It is so obviously her own struggle with religion and the Garden of Eden as well as a lesson in the Sumerian Culture and its daily life style. I guess I think the book was self serving.

jorisdls
Joris D jorisdls — All right, soo, I felt disappointed when I finished Succubus Blues. I expected a dark fantasy with a protagnist who has a past. Who is centuries old AND a succubus. Plus, Richelle Mead wrote it (I liked her VA series when I was younger and her new Bloodlines series is awesome). I thought: 'Yeaaah!' When I finished Succubus Blues I thought: 'Why Lord? What did I do wrong to deserve this?' Here some thoughts: -Soooo, Georgina is centuries old, but she doesn't know a thing about the supernatuarl world? I kind of find this hard to believe. If I was turned into a succubus then the first thing I would do is find out about all things related to my supposed 'job of hell'. Peter did not know a thing. He is also a centuries old creature of hell. A normal person knows about nephilim. That is basic Bible stuff. If I were a creature of hell, i kind of had to know about the book I was supposedly against. I you're breaking the rules, at least have the decency to know them. -What is up with everybody LOVING Georgina? Ooow, she's amazinggggg! She is lovely! Angles would fall out of heaven just for the chance of seeing her in all her glory! She is all about, 'Ow, I don't want to stand at the register, people will fall over themselves for me, poor me.' I thought, well, you can shapeshift, so if you don't like the attention then turn in a plain girl, with normal looks, but nooooooo! She has to look the way she does. -Please, I knew from the beginning who murdered all the supernatural creatures and Georgina is not the detective she plays to be. Every conclusion she came to, I was like: 'Well duuuh. Wasn't that obvious?' -I didn't get my dark fantasy, instead I got a conflicted succubus with personality issues. After all those centuries she still acts like a kid. We didn't get real succubus action. -*Sigh.* And then the romantic interest. I'm sorry Sean (?), it didn't wotk out betwen us at all. I like confident men and you acted like a little boy on th playground wanting to hold hands with th pretty blond girl with the lovely braids and summerdress. -Really? That background story of Letha was so sappy and totally illogical. BTW, How old was Letha when she married that Greek guy? Becoming a succubus out of this is just, well, it felt forced. The background story slowly unraveled and at the end the only thing I thought was: 'Really? That's it? She became a succubus, because of this? Oooow, I'm so amazing that the only way I can save my (ex-) husband from killing himself is by erasing my whole existence from his mind, because no one would get over someone like me. - The creatures of hell were all fluffy unicorns who farted rainbows all day. I didn't get the feel of real evil lurking here. -The ending just sucked. 'Ow, I'll become a full succubus just because of one guy that I just met, but know on a deeper level. Goodbye, morals!' - Ow. And then the eternal punishment thingie. I think someone should give her a selfhelpbook on: 'How to forgive myself for things such as cheating on my husband and other casualties

driftingdrtaftsmen
Guy Torres driftingdrtaftsmen — Wow, this is a hell of a book. The prose style is ravishing - Chabon is definitely a maximalist. His language is virtuosic, full of pyrotechnics and equally in love with the idiom of hard-boiled detective fiction and with Yiddish. It blows you away, and it's also funny. The world that Chabon creates - the federal district of Sitka, Alaska which became a temporary Jewish homeland after the Holocaust and the collapse of Israel in 1948 - is so thoroughly, magnificently detailed that you never question it for a moment. It's immersive - there is no blinking. This book did for me what Tolkien's books did for so many people (and what no book has done for me since William Pene duBois' "The Twenty-One Balloons" in fourth grade) -- provided another world for the reader to enter and live in which has all the depth, flavor and texture as the real one, and is preferable. It makes your heart break to put the book down and remember that none of it is real. There are no Jews in Sitka. Each character is vividly imagined and seemingly taken as an opportunity to have as much fun as possible with the premise - there's the detective's partner, a half-Tlingit-half-Jewish behemoth who wears a yarmulke and carries a tribal warhammer to aid in interrogations. There's the heavy, in this case a 400-lb hasidic rebbe. And there's the deceased, a gay, heroin-addicted, reluctant tzadik hador who uses tefillin to tie-off before shooting up for the last time and also happens to be a chess prodigy. And it's deep, too! As if writing the first alternate-history-Yiddish-noir weren't enough for one book, Chabon also gets into some fairly heavy thematic territory: fathers and sons, faith and redemption, doubt and despair, alcoholism and drug dependency, marriage, messianism, homeland, and what I sense are the big questions for himself -- what is the birthright of the Jewish people? What is the inheritance of every Jew? What does it mean to be Jewish? Do I have any problems with the book? Alright, maybe the pace slows a bit in the middle section (although I'm grateful to have spent more time with these characters). Maybe the solution to the mystery, the revelation of the grand conspiracy, feels less credible than the rest of the story. Maybe it seems like a stretch, but it also may be that it has to be as it is for thematic reasons. I can't quibble with this thing. I loved it. It was a knockout. It's hard to be objective when a book is just two of my favorite things (Judaism and a murder-mystery) together at last, but I haven't gotten this much giddy joy out of a book since I was ten years old and reading about the diamond mines of Krakatoa. It carries you away - you put it down, and just like when you were a kid, you stare off, grinning, and say "wow..."
