Everard Strong whizbangstudios — ** spoiler alert ** While Marina is told she "has the gift" of psychic ability as a child, she is led to believe that the messenger is just a nut case by her mother, who exploits her daughter to support her own lifestyle. Hardened and isolated Marina becomes a grifter/psychic, never believing in soothsaying or any aspect of psychic abilities, until she cannot deny the things she begins to "see" and "know". How she gets there, the denial system she has armed her self with, and why, are all fascinating. I enjoyed the journey of seeing her be constructed, deconstructed, and reconstructed - along with the clients she collects on the way.

Alexandre Junqueira alexjunq — A warning before you start this book: You won't be able to put it down! I made the mistake of starting it before I went to bed and ended up staying awake all night just to finish it. I've always loved dragons and this series only makes me love them more! Vanish picks up right where Firelight left off — the gap isn't even a day! — with Jacinda and her family going back to the pride. The plot is so fast-paced and full of twists that I stayed on the edge of my seat, and there are a bunch of revelations that made my jaw drop. I honestly adore Jacinda! I've read so many reviews that say she's indecisive and angsty, but I think that her flaws and actions make her feel so much more real and easy to relate to. And I swear, this romance will be the end of me one day. I LOVED the (non) draki-hunter Will to the moon and beyond, but even I have to admit that Cassian had his moments! ♥ With a fast-paced plot, a quick writing style, and tons of surprises, Vanish is definitely a one-sit read! If you haven't started this series yet, then I definitely recommend that you do because this is a cool series you don't want to miss! :) BUY or BORROW?: Am I the only one who is IN LOVE with these covers, scales and all?? O A _s_sman — To someone who has never heard of Girl Genius, this novelization of the first three volumes of Phil and Kaja Foglio's magnum opus reads like a compelling, albeit only competently rendered, steampunk story. To a huge Girl Genius fan, it's a colossal disappointment.* The Foglios fill in a few details not made clear in the graphic novels, several of them fairly important,** but for the most part this book is a straight-up transcript with no attempt at story development. All the priceless mannerisms and hilarious background details are lost, with no worthwhile substitute. Another, relatively minor, thing: Argh, proofreading! I own a second printing, supposedly much cleaner typographically than the first, but some of the spelling and grammar mistakes drove me to acute, throbbing-vein-on-the-forehead hypertension. If there are two ways to spell a word, the Foglios will inevitably pick the wrong one. Kind of like in the comic, but without five hundred rabid fanboys and -girls waiting to pick apart every new page the moment it's posted on the Web site. _________________ *In the first case, I'm projecting myself into the mind of someone who has never heard of Girl Genius.
