Craig Burke _ragar — My son received this book in a cardboard truck style set of 10 entitled The Amazing Machines Truckload of Fun. Whilst not able to review each and every one, I wanted to show what an absolutely brilliant set of books these are! I chose ‘Flashing Fire Engines’ as this has been one of the favourites alongside ‘Dazzling Diggers’! Each book is written entirely in a clever yet simplistic perfect rhyming style describing a particular vehicle, its constituent parts and what and how it is used – ‘As soon as there’s a fire alarm, the engine starts to roar. The fire-fighters jump aboard – it rumbles out the door’, so making them easy and entertaining reading for parents and memorable for children. The accompanying graphics are bright and colourful and promote great discussions about the characters and their actions. The final page contains details of ‘Fire Engine Bits’ and includes small images with well thought and written descriptions such as ‘fireproof coats and trousers – these are made from special material that does not burn easily and protects fire-fighters from the fire’ – that pre-school children can understand and learn from. This set of books is a great size (similar to that of the Mr Men series) and hence easily transportable when entertainment is required out and about. Verdict: Absolutely fantastic set of books that I would highly recommend to anyone with a train/digger/fire engine/truck mad pre-schooler, or just anyone who enjoys entertaining children’s books! Fiorella Apaza _iorell_paza — Other reviewers say fast read, I totally agree. I read it in one sitting, partly because of the pace of the book and partly because I wanted to see what happened next. The premise is scary, yet not totally out of the realm of possibility, at least somewhat. For much of the book, I liked that you weren't certain who the bad guys were, but then at the end I think Card wanted the liberals to be the bad guys so that seeped in to the writing. That was a bummer.

Giangiacomo Postir mazorin — (Note: This didn't take as long to read as it looks—I'd started it, but then got swamped by schoolwork and put it aside.) My knowledge of the Lewis and Clark expedition is limited to what little I'd learned in school over the years (i.e., not much), so I can't speak to the historical accuracy of this graphic novel. That said, I enjoyed reading it. Not because there was anything particularly surprising or because I learned anything really new, but because (as a previous reviewer said) it gives personalities to the historical figures so that they aren't just entities anymore. I think maybe the best part about reading this is that it piqued my interest in the expedition, and makes me want to research it further myself. The one thing that maybe bothered me a bit was that I'd sometimes turn the page, and end up somewhat uncertain as to whether I should be reading across the two pages, or down the first. Perhaps you can write that off as my relative inexperience with graphic novels/comics in general. Full disclosure: I received the book free through Goodreads First Reads.

Ronnel Razon ronneldrazon — Ridiculously British in nature. That is to say it is so comical and so morose at the same time. Filled with great characters and situations, yet the themes and humor can get repetitive at times. Still, it's a jolly good read.
