It was hard for me to get through much of this book (especially the battle scenes), but if you can make it through, it's definitely worth it in the end. The ending makes you reconsider the book as a whole. Very well written. I look forward to reading other McEwan books (Saturday is on the list) to see if they have similar qualities.

listened to a librivox ensemble performance of goddard's perils of pauline. very well done. totally captivated by the story of a determined young woman who insisted on independence and wanted to "live" before she married ... and the nefarious shadows that wanted her fortune for themselves. a fiction of its time. and totally enjoyable. recommended. also an indication that this book is "of its time" are the ethnic and racial comments made (the usual suspects: chinese, italians, irish, gypsies anti-catholic, black folks, and the indians who are, in turn, the abetting populations of the first-line nefarious bad guys or as points of sarcasm) that simply would not show up in a book published today, one hundred years later -- perils of pauline published 1914. it gives hope: slowly but surely we loose our biases realizing that we are all as one interestingly h rider haggard's she series publication dates were from 1885-1921 and goddard's perils of pauline -- which includes a "she" who is connected with the egyptian mystery of the pyramids and, as saver of humankind, represents the most-worthy blonde white population -- fits right into that time frame for these popular, captivating novels biased toward WASP populations and which immediately predate WWI and WWII. still as pure adventure novels both the she series and perils/pauline make for fun reading.

My son received this book in a cardboard truck style set of 10 entitled The Amazing Machines Truckload of Fun. Whilst not able to review each and every one, I wanted to show what an absolutely brilliant set of books these are! I chose ‘Flashing Fire Engines’ as this has been one of the favourites alongside ‘Dazzling Diggers’! Each book is written entirely in a clever yet simplistic perfect rhyming style describing a particular vehicle, its constituent parts and what and how it is used – ‘As soon as there’s a fire alarm, the engine starts to roar. The fire-fighters jump aboard – it rumbles out the door’, so making them easy and entertaining reading for parents and memorable for children. The accompanying graphics are bright and colourful and promote great discussions about the characters and their actions. The final page contains details of ‘Fire Engine Bits’ and includes small images with well thought and written descriptions such as ‘fireproof coats and trousers – these are made from special material that does not burn easily and protects fire-fighters from the fire’ – that pre-school children can understand and learn from. This set of books is a great size (similar to that of the Mr Men series) and hence easily transportable when entertainment is required out and about. Verdict: Absolutely fantastic set of books that I would highly recommend to anyone with a train/digger/fire engine/truck mad pre-schooler, or just anyone who enjoys entertaining children’s books!
