esommerfeld
Elizabeth Sommerfeld esommerfeld — This book was almost as compelling as fiction--I read it all day, even in the dark in the car (DH driving). Gladwell admits his own success didn't come out of nowhere; you can imagine his analytical thinking came from a mathematician father, his direct, compelling, compassionate communication from his therapist mother. He points out how success (and lack thereof) isn't just due to any individual's efforts or talents alone (though these are necessary) but to many other circumstances. Some man-made rules only squander talent, like athletic leagues with one [arbitrary:] cut-off birthdate for participation every year. Other things like the era in which we are born are harder to control. We also learn that our cultural legacy may help in some situations but in those where it hinders we can escape it. I particularly enjoyed the chapters 3, 4, and 9, because I am all about child development and education. We are smart enough and while we can't control everything, we can create opportunities, especially for more children.

_richard
Hrichard Santos _richard — OK. Generally, I don't like this kind of book (teen angst/girly romance/action/eldritch). HOWEVER... this one was OK. Possibly because I just read two of the Hush Hush books, which are... well, read my reviews on them. Needless to say, these books are better. The "City" books in general and this one in particular contain a great deal less whining and a lot more action. The characters, including the minor characters, receive the attention they are due, and the story realistically addresses the sociological situation caused by five supernatural races occupying the same small island. The thing I like the most about these books is that they don't treat the female characters as if they constantly need to be rescued. The females get on with rescuing themselves, and often others while they're at it.

alfansuo
Ma Fa alfansuo — Re-read in March 2013: An interesting speculative work of science fiction. Eva was a warm and likeable heroine, with an intelligence and strength that was at times humbling. Her circumstances were horrific, but I liked the idea that (view spoiler) as it explained why she could cope with her new situation. The future-world setting was a little vague -- as one reviewer already mentioned, the technology was practically the same but everything just had a different name... Oh, and I thought the idea of humans becoming suicidal as nature's solution to overpopulation was interesting.

ladsqueiroz
Ladyslaw Queiroz ladsqueiroz — It's been a while since I read this book but I felt that I needed to review it. I loved this book, I couldn't stop reading. I found myself flicking forward to see when Patch appeared *sighs*. The only reason why this wasn't a 5 star book was because Nora began to annoy me, I wanted to slap her seriously! Everytime Patch tried to talk to her after the little 'omg he didn't say he loved me back' (after making out in his car infront of her house..hmm) incident, Nora pushed him away. If Nora loved Patch so much why would she do this? Sometimes I had to just put the book down due to stuff like her jealousy of Marcie Miller who began to spend more time with Patch,I mean come on woman get it together! Anyway, rant over about Nora, this really is a good book besides her insecurity over their relationship. Highly recommended!
