rebewyt
Rebe Wong rebewyt — I thought that overall this was a great book. It had two different stories in India, Evie post WWII and Adela 100 years earlier. Both of the stories were well developed and the characters were very three dimensional. I learned a lot that I didn't know about India's history and some of the cultures there. I'm a little embarrassed about how little I knew about the Partition. So it was nice to learn things as well as being entertained. Some things I didn't like as much were that Adela's and Felicity's story wasn't always in the same format. It bounced between letters and journals, which was okay, but then it would oddly jump into third person narrative. And after all the drama that Evie went through and so much false hope, her final resolution with her husband didn't seem like enough. I guess that was kind of the point - that they'd always have to work on their relationship - but still, I needed something a little more. But neither of these things ruined the book for me. It was still an entertaining and informative book over all. *There is some language and sexuality in the book*

_icardo_ogea
Ricardo Bogéa _icardo_ogea — Tom Wolfe is amazing and, despite what the critics said, I think this book is a pretty accurate depiction of college life. I am giving it three stars because, while I enjoyed it, I will probably never read it again.

_olchina
Sandra Kolchina _olchina — ** spoiler alert ** Wow. Songs of the Humpback Whale took me almost three years--to the day--to read. o_O I kind of hated this book. Not really because of any problems with the book itself. It's well written, just like all of Jodi Picoult's books have been. The plot was interesting and still sucked me in, albeit reluctantly. But, I like things best when they have characters I can sympathize with, characters I can like. I didn't like or sympathize with any of these characters. And yet... I still came to care about them. Which made their stories all the more painful to read. Jodi Picoult is kind of known for her plot twists. There are, in my experience, usually two--one that's almost expected, and one that definitely isn't. Most of the time, these come at the end of the book. The most unexpected plot twist in Songs of the Humpback Whale came in the first half of this book: Hadley dies. Rebecca tells us so because she remembers the story in reverse, and his death is near the end of the story. You know from then on out that everything is going to go to hell and it makes for a reading experience where you've got your eyes mostly squinched up so you can barely see the page and you're holding the book at arm's length because you're not sure you want to know what happens next--but you're still reading. There's never a real lull in which everyone is okay either. Someone is always in pain. The end isn't any better. You could make arguments all day long about how it may be bittersweet, but that there's hope. Sam can move on. Joley and Jane will see each other again eventually. Oliver has truly changed. Rebecca will get better. Jane will learn to be happy. No. Just no. It's a terrible ending. Hadley is dead--and worse, his death was pointless. Rebecca watched him die and she will likely blame her mother and herself for it. Oliver got what he wanted, but I have a hard time believing the changes he's supposedly undergone (Oliver was my least favorite character), will stick. Sam and Jane will never get a chance to be happy. And Joley has to say goodbye to his sister again. I've never liked stories with unhappy endings. What you, dear reader, should take away from this is that I didn't enjoy the book. I make no commentary on whether you should or shouldn't read it (if you haven't, shame on you for reading this far). I'm simply recording my thoughts.

Entretenido
