Fay Jiang _ay_iang — Received free from Goodreads First Reads. May have some slight spoilers. Okay, the second star is because I give him props for getting his life on track, for publishing two books, and for staying clean, sober, and on the right side of the law... That being said, this book just didn't do it for me. There were a couple of times I actually said, out loud, really? For example...on page 57, when talking about being uncooperative with police regarding a man being stabbed not only in his presence, but when the man is being held in a headlock by the author, the author states "I don't regret being uncooperative with the police interview. Testifying goes againsst my core values and beliefs." Seriously? That doesn't make you sound rehabilitated...it makes you sound like a punk. One who hasn't learned anything about the value of human life. Another example, while less serious for me, but still annoying, is on page 64. It says, "They couldn't pay the extra officers to take control of the prison while their coworkers were doing training; budget cuts! I know some guys who are trying to fight that in court and I sure hope they win. It sucks to be in a cell all afternoon in the summer on a nice day (or any day really). I actually said, out loud again, "YOU BROKE THE LAW!" Sorry, but being "stuck" in a cell is the punishment you received for doing something that is against the law. Don't like it? GOOD! That's why it's punishment! If you liked it, it would be a rather ineffective punishment, don't you think? Don't want to stay in a cell all day? Don't break the law. Again, I give him props for staying out of trouble. I give him props for getting his story out there. But sometimes, he's quite whiny about how bad he had it, the writing is subpar, and he portrays himself as a victim without any regard of the actual victims of the crimes of not only himself, but the other prisoners. Would have been one star, but gave him one just for staying clean. Will not be reading this again.

黄木 精治 lmm011446027 — This is about the Taiping Rebellion - how one man encountered Christianity, through a series of sickbed visions determined he was the son of God, and gained thousands of followers and eventually controlled a large region of China. While I was initially thrown off by Spence's use of the literary present, I eventually got into it. A lot of his focus is on Hong Xiuquan's inner circle of followers (all of whom were given majestic titles such as East King and Wing King) and the power plays between them. A primary tool used by them was claiming to be the voice of God or Jesus. I'm really fascinated by religions that see deity as something so immediate (a basic tenet of the Taiping was that God was corporeal).
