Ruslan Nos nosruslan — Really, this must be an impossible book to market. If you're a professional anthropologist of education or educational anthropologist (don't be fooled: the two phrases are not exactly interchangeable), you probably don't have much use for a "companion" such as this except, perhaps, to keep tabs on what your friends in the field are writing. And if you're either a casual reader or an educator looking for ways to improve your craft, you probably wouldn't come within a mile of this collection of rather dense essays about the work being done in an admittedly marginal field both of education and anthropology. So the book caters to the in-betweens, that is, students who're enrolled in an Anthropology of Education course. As one of those, I have just a few reflections: First, at $160 (or more), the book is just way too expensive. Good thing the University of Texas library had an electronic copy I could sponge, or this review would've been ugly. I don't think I would've ever overcome spending that kind of money for a 600-page anthology of essays. Unbelievable. Second, although they vary in quality, the essays collected here have clearly been vetted and edited well; they cover a vast terrain without losing touch with one another and, more importantly, they're not too redundant. Sure, lots of mentions of Spindler & Wife, Margaret Mead, and Bourdieau, but that's to be expected. Third, and lastly, at its heart the book is little more than a "state of the field" display, with various field leaders sounding in their opinions on where the discipline has been, where it is presently, and where it should go. As such, it's an enlightening lesson in history and context... but not such a great research tool. Now that I'm working on an actual paper for the Anthro/Ed course, I find the book's best help is its copious bibliographies. I know it isn't easy to edit a collection of so many chapters on so many related topics, and I know it isn't easy to market a book for a limited audience within what it already a rather small subfield. So I'll be generous: four stars.

mcpdesigns
Matt Pires mcpdesigns — Great romance novel! A British doctor unexpectedly does some time traveling and ends up in Scotland meeting the love of her life. Smart, well developed characters, interesting history of Scotland, interesting tidbits of medical herbal practice of the day. The second in the series is also great. The third ok, and from there they get pretty lame.

andreacastura
Andrea Casturà andreacastura — Things have come full circle in Mercy Falls and roles have been reversed. Grace is a wolf while Sam stays solidly human. One thing remains the same: Sam and Grace once more have to put off their plans for the future, but their love is mature and stronger than ever. Cole and Isabel try to work through their tension which is difficult since Isabel has decided to avoid him. Their almost-relationship is an important foil of Sam’s and Grace’s relationship. While Sam waits for Grace to return to her human form and find him, a girl falls victim to the wolves, spurring Isabel’s father, Thomas Culpeper, to action. He has had enough of the wolves and works toward getting them off of the protected list so that a final, professional hunt can be planned. Cole has plans of his own. He works tirelessly on finding a cure for the wolf infection, testing his theories on himself in between setting traps for the other wolves. Will Sam, Cole, and Isabel get Grace and the other wolves out of Boundary Wood before Tom Culpeper gets his way? Will Grace turn human? Will Cole’s science experiments work? I absolutely fell in love with Shiver and Linger. I was mesmerized by the town of Mercy Falls with its long winters and too short summers where infected humans became not werewolves, but actual wolves who shed their human skins and identities to live half-lives. I was drawn in by the lyrical quality Maggie Stiefvater infused into her books as well as by the love story that could withstand the test of time, despite how short a time it seemed it would have to flourish. The world of Grace and Sam, Cole and Isabel, is a poetic one in which the most minute detail becomes alive and beautiful, an image that lingers long after reading. Maggie Stiefvater continues this lyrical, poetic tradition in Forever. It was everything a fan of the series could want. It was consistent, had the same tone, and it contained a lot of necessary events (even though some of them were heartbreaking). I was still invested in all of the characters, especially Isabel, who is my favorite in the series for her cool exterior and her inner vulnerability. The relationships were everything I could hope for: the security of Sam and Grace, who were both broken to different degrees as children and have since healed as well as the insecurity of Cole and Isabel who have so recently been broken and who are only now beginning to heal.
