cpch04
Ceci Pc cpch04 — I think it's fair to say that I'm vehemently ambivalent about this book. On the one hand, I'm amazed that a book as critically acclaimed as this one contains a cipher protagonist who does little and says even less in the course of the book. Her sole purpose seems to be to spout cultural and literary references to set the mood, and later give the reader enough clues to figure out the mystery. Then again, I know an awful lot of readers who enjoy being made to feel clever. I get the feeling that it was written by someone like this for people like this. On the other hand, I do not exclude myself from the group of readers susceptible to flattery. I adored the playful structure, and the mystery, when we finally got to that part, was utterly engaging. In fact, when the protagonist was allowed to do something other than stand around and feel alienated, it was a joy to read. Sadly, those moments were few and far between in the first 2/3 of the book. This is the story of Blue van Meer, whose itinerant scholar father drags her from academic backwater to academic backwater until her final year of high school. There, she (inevitably temporarily) falls in with the cool crowd, thanks to the mysterious machinations of popular teacher Hannah Schneider. There's a death, then another death, and Blue becomes convinced that the two are connected while (surprise!) becoming increasingly isolated from her "friends." The author works very hard to elevate the standard high school types with quirk/shocking behavior and occasionally succeeds, but the ironic, self-aware academic text structure ultimately falls short, since the heart of this story, the relationship between Blue and her father, too often takes a backseat to Blue spending time with people she doesn't even like for the sole purpose of learning things she'll need to solve the mystery, thinly masked by bizarre behavior cribbed from David Foster Wallace. It's not surprising that there's a lack of emotional heft, given the marked mean-spiritedness an disbelief with which children from loving, nuclear families are regarded. There are passing attempts to balance Blue's alienation with the highs that are just as much a part of the teenaged experience, such as the fabulously written crush she develops on their gardener, but they are sadly, few. The inspired moments in this book, like Blue's trip to Paris with her dad and the hike with Hannah and the cool kids are what made this a three-star read for me rather than a two-star read. In these moments, we see Blue interact with the world outside her small sphere of experience, and it made me want to see more of that person. With any hope, this young, talented author will strive to give us more of that as she matures and leave the academic navel-gazing to other first-time novelists.

Nádia Paim arquinadia — A fun read, if you're familiar with Jane and Michael Stern's column in Gourmet magazine and their weekly Splendid Table interview. Not especially well-written, but amusing stories about traveling America's back- highways

Funfun Ng _mimimmomo — Refreshing to have read a very entertaining dark fantasy novel with a male lead, as most that I've been reading have been females. Also, having seen the short lived SciFi (SyFy) series, it was interesting to see the inspiration. Totally recommended.
