Gina Rego ginarego0ffb — This isn't so much a story as a conceptual world construction that eventual fails to answer any questions or provide closure. I read this at the request of friend who wanted an engineers perspective on the concepts and potential technological applications and was left wanting. In the beginning Stephenson creates an intriguing world based on potential technologies and showcases the way these advances would impact societies and the political environment of the world but he starts to lose you as he moves from developing the construct into tell a story. Stephenson glosses over how any of these ideas are possible and completely ignores the changes that have would occurred to control the advances his world operates in. Quite frankly it would make more sense if the technology was some how discovered from aliens or some other improbably source rather than discovered by his societies. Ignoring the improbability of his future I struggled with his story, the build up and character development are pretty good but it eventually feels he is looking for a way out of the story and leaves the reader with a constant feeling that this is the first in a series of books as you continuously check the remaining pages, questioning how he will wrap everything up in time until you eventually realize that he doesn't. All in all it had some interesting concepts all be it ill conceived and his characters were likable but the book as a whole left me wanting a more substantial description of the technologies and mechanics of his future society as well as a less ambiguous ending to the story he is trying to tell.

Muhammad Omar m_omarahsan — I would probably give this one and a half stars. The atmosphere of this book reminded me very much of the writing of Betsy Haynes in her "Bone Chillers" series. Of course, this title in particular was very alike topically to one of those books, perhaps accounting for some of the similarities. Tom B. Stone maintained a good amount of suspense throughout, and this was a good book.

Simon C _imon_higova — One of my favourite books! It's so incredible - it creates an alternate world that's just enough like this one for you to get shivers as you read it. Dushma is a wonderful heroine - very likeable and seemingly normal enough, but bit by bit her past is revealed and it's intriguing. The book ends a little abruptly, and I've always wondered what happened to her afterwards, but apparently there's a sequel...
