Eyad Omara _yadomara — This book makes for good, light reading. (I got through it an evening, and since I’m a slow reader, I know it demanded little of me.) Those uninformed about history might find the material new. But people who are well-read on the birth of civilizations, or humanity’s complicated dance with the environment (both now and in the past) are aware of the social, technological, economic, cultural, societal, and political aspects of that yummy stuff we call our sustenance. This is a solid, single-volume introduction to the human animal’s relationship with food; but I found myself wanting Standage to go deeper into the topics he raises. I do applaud the author for taking an unorthodox approach to history, as reading about the social and technological aspect of history appeals to me more than learning how people have blown or hacked each other to bits on battlefields. I’m also pleased that he understands that we have altered our food (i.e. through genetics) as much as it has altered us. We do take our food for granted (well, many of us do) and seldom spot how our choices of what to grow, weed, buy, trade, cook, and flaunt have shaped the social and physical environments. But then, that can be said for so many things in our lives. When we pick up a pencil to jot down someone’s phone number, do we really think about the details of its invention, any pop cultural references, or the raw materials and labor that went into its creation? So I do believe Standage’s book has value, especially for those who seldom consider the hidden history of the food they eat. As geeky as it sounds, I actually do know a lot about humanity’s relationship with the potato. Thanks to this pleasant read, I’ll make boxty for breakfast tomorrow.

Chow Yoobi _oobi — This is the book that inspired me to become a beekeeper. The writing is clear, concise and always interesting. Much like Mary Roach, Bishop's style delivers facts via humor and obscure information that keeps your attention throughout. A must read for natural history buffs as well as anyone interested in honey and/or honeybees. My Amazon review: I don't think I can add much to all of the valid points the other reviewers have touched on (although I take issue with the scientific criticisms of one reviewer - I think she didn't read those passages closely enough) however I can't resist saying how enjoyable and eminently readable Holley Bishop's book is. Her writing style is engaging and memorable. It has been a long time since I have had such a wonderful combination of history, science, anthropology, and memoir ("Stiff" by Mary Roach probably being the last one). Bishop provides so much fabulous information I have no doubt she is creating a new generation of wanna-beekeepers that just might help save our swiftly deteriorating honeybee populations. I am recommending this book all over the place and everyone is loving it. A great read from teen on up.
