Editor Mydesy mydesy — I picked this book up in a Croatian bookstore, wanting to read something about India before I got there. It turns out that it's about exactly where I was going: Kalimpong, in India's mountainous Northeast at the foothills of the Himalayas. The story is beautiful: young and impossible love, community life, fiery politics, the outside world. And everywhere I went in northern India I carried it in my heart with me. Quite a few times I thought I saw Gyan in the streets--it could have been. There were quite a few heartthrob Gorkha schoolboys. And walking through a military base I saw the same green butterfly, I'm sure, that they all spotted on a bridge on the way back to Darjeeling. I didn't take a picture though; the character who did lost everything.

Eveli Liivak effic — I believe this was my first biography. I don't remember how old I was when I read it, but I do remember crying in the end when his daughter kept her last name in memory of her father. I don't think I'd read it again, but I now have a better appreciation for "'Who's' On First?'".

Jokyun Jeong jokyun — Over spring break, I read The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka. After hearing a lecture on part of the novel, I decided to read it. Gregor, a travelling salesman, wakes up one morning transformed "into a monstrous vermin(687)." Through the novel, we see Gregor's plea for recognition from the family. His transformation brings distress among the family because he is the only working man in the house among his father, mother, sister and himself. The family is then forced to find work. In the end, Gregor eventually dies but the family lives on. We find that the metamorphosis was not that of Gregor, but that of the family. This book is closely related to Franz Kafka's life. The novel is like an autobiographical fiction. His fathers demands on him as a child are seen throughout the novel. I personally didn't enjoy the book that much. It was difficult to connect to. However, the irony in the novel is extremely interesting.

александър евтимов-чучи aevtimov — This was narrated by a person who lived with the indians in the frozen north for 12 years and was intimately familiar with their customs and ways of life. Three strangers appeared one day and just stayed. At first they were welcome, then they became a drain. There was no fitting in. The language was beautiful, and the confusion of the people seemed very real. This was in the early 1800's when three people disappeared when they left the ship, and next visit, shipmates decided to check and see what they could find. An epic narrative very worth reading. Besides the inuit customs, the confusion of mixing different unknown cultures is brought to the forefront.
