As Serviçais fala-nos sobre a discriminação a que os negros foram sujeitos no Mississipi na década de 60. Kathryn Stockett, a partir de três personagens principais que narram este romance, mostra-nos o ponto de vista das empregadas negras que fazem a lida doméstica e tratam das crianças brancas, das pessoas que maltratam os negros e dos brancos que, apesar de não concordarem com os comportamentos racistas nada fazem ou dizem para evitar conflitos e para não serem excluídos socialmente. Mas Seekter,uma pós-universitária branca, não vai ficar de braços cruzados e em segredo, vai tentar dar voz às empregadas negras de Jackson no Mississipi.

Aryan Yoba aryanyobazr — I thought initially that it was going to be some fluff/trashy reading for my plane ride last weekend. I was wrong. It was actually a part historical, part fictionalized account of a southern family whose house was commandeered for the purposes of providing a hospital for wounded Confederate POWs. The woman of the house, who had completely withdrawn from life for reasons of her own, finds herself drawn to one of the soldiers. There was nothing sordid or trashy about it and I actually learned a bit about the Battle of Franklin in Tennessee. The book is a bit tedious in spots and gets a bit muddled with its multiple point-of-view narrations but in the end I thought it was a satisfying novel that is based on letters and diaries from various soldiers and family members. If I ever travel to Tennessee, I would like to visit the house and Confederate cematary portrayed in the book.

Hüseyin Arıcı huseyinarici — I'm surprised I missed this book, one of Hannah's earlier ones, since I really enjoy her writing! She opens eyes with her stories...in this one, the emotional breakdown of a marriage as a result of subliminating oneself to the needs of others to the detriment of one or both spouses and the extenuating effects on all relationships that are connected with that marriage. Good book!
