It is especially interesting to read in the present day and to see how our concerns as human beings don't really change much. While often quite cynical, Huxley has truth mixed with his imaginations for our future. I really enjoyed his quotes and findings from Skinner, Pavlov and also analysis of Hitler's reign.

Brubru Lamlam _ru_am — I'm really perplexed why I rated this book only 3 stars a few years back. Perhaps I was just a egotistical little shit back then. Back then, of course. *cough* I was humbled, grateful, and so entertained by this book. There are some chapters I want to sit down and read all over again right this minute. Other chapters I'll settle on reading once a year when I re-read the entire book. This second reading of Bird by Bird took me about half a year to finish. I found that after every chapter, I wanted to pause and let the wisdom kind of culminate with what was going on with me at the time and things I had been turning over in my head. What I wouldn't do to get my hands on a stack of Anne Lamott's index cards - man do her little vignettes pack a whole lot of lesson about life and writing. One thing I'm chewing over from BbB is that getting published isn't the end-all-be-all of writing. It's not the award at the end of your work - all the days you wrote the book, both absolutely excrusiating days and the absolute best writing you've ever produced days, are the award. Being an artist, getting to write every day is the reward. Don't make it the chore and the means to an end to get published. This message also reminds me of one of a prominent lesson from A Series of Extraordinary Events by Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket). Enjoy the ride.
