June Paik junepaik — I LOVE ELLEN! I was constantly laughing while reading this book, which can be somewhat embarrassing while you are in public places but that's okay I guess.

Juul Weers juulweers26cb8 — I loved this book… a lot more than I ever thought I would. The story is a series of letters from Screwtape, a senior demon, to his nephew Wormwood, a more junior "temptor." In each letter, Screwtape attempts to teach his nephew how to win his "patient's" soul over to the devil. In each chapter, Screwtape explains some aspect of the human condition that may be exploited by the temptor to win the patient over to hell. Screwtape explains the methods that God uses to protect Christians. What surprised me most -- what I enjoyed most -- was that, repeatedly, Screwtape described humans' free-will, intelligence, and rationality as some of the strongest assets that draw them to God and true Christianity. I have to say, that's a really nice switch from much of what I've seen or felt in recent years. Not necessarily in the church I attend, but in general, so much of the contemporary Christian message feels to me like an appeal to blind faith and raw emotionalism. That’s a message that feels intellectually empty and superficial to me. I loved a presentation that put freedom and rational thought in harmony with true Christianity. There's room for thought. There's room for doubt. There's room for true freedom. I think I especially liked the epiologue, "Screwtape Proposes a Toast." where Screwtape makes a distinction between true democracy and a popular, cultural type of thing that we call "democracy" that is really more about envy. Highly thought provoking.
