Maayan Sherban maayansn — hmm...hmm...hmmm I just don't know. I wanted very much to really like this book, but I only got to like. I read several other books before finishing this one. It's definitely not your average vampire or angel story. Elena Deveraux is a hunter-born vampire tracker and in Angels' Blood we find that she has been chosen for a very special hunt for a very special prey of a VIP client. Before, during and after the hunt, Elena is entwined in the will they/won't they of a relationship with one of the worlds most powerful Archangel's, Rafael. There is a bit of world-building going on and laying the groundwork for future series entries. The storyline is interesting and the world that is still being built here is extremely intriguing. It is intriguing enough that I'll try book 2 and possibly 3 before I make a decision on going farther. The first half of the book was difficult for me to get through (it was just dull) and it wasn't until we got to the actual hunt that I cared about the ending. But still not overly so but I did find things to love. My favorite conceit was the archangels ruling the world and creating the vampires. The hunt & battle are exciting and move the story rapidly. The after action cleanup was also good as things were wrapped up and set up for the 2nd book of the series. The secondary characters held my interest the most and were clearly defined. I especially liked Dmitri. It took me a minute to warm to Rafael - but I did. Uram was a worthy protagonist. The things that didn't work for me were Elena herself. I enjoyed her more as a secondary character in the prequel. She didn't seem to have much to say. I was fine with the family baggage - have a matching set myself. The repetition of her POV describing Rafael having a scent like cool water and having cobalt blue eyes. If you don't know what cool water smells like or know what color cobalt blue is you won't know if it is said one time or 150times. Either pick a different description or move on. Her other thought was that she wouldn't succumb to Rafael. It got wearying. The second thing that didn't work for me was the romance. Just as much romance can be found between f-buddies or on a booty-call.There was light flirting and resistance on both their parts. So to turn the page and both of them so in love they couldn't live without each other -- ever! And at the same time?!?! It was hard to swallow and unbelievable. There was a lot of sex and lust but not much romance.

Karen Lundquist karenmpls — Formulaic plot -- could see it being turned into a "National Treasure III". But I was very entertained by it -- made a good vacation read.

Eliza Eliza elizarifi7e89 — Although A Very Long Engagement was interesting and intriguing, it was not one of the best books I have ever read. There was, however, extremely valuable information throughout the book. I learned a ton about trench warfare and the conditions and happenings in these trenches. I feel more educated on the things that went on in the trenches and particularly the relationship between different men in the trenches. I wasn’t previously aware of neither how people stationed in the holes were treated nor how they lived, and this book helped clarify my perspective. The basis of A Very Long Engagement is a woman called Mathilde who is searching for her fiancé who, apparently, was killed in action in WWI. Doubtful of Manech’s death, Mathilde follows the faint, buried trail left by her beloved Manech. The novel can be long and dreary, though there are a few parts in which you are biting your nails. One thing about this book, however, is that it is extremely difficult to follow. It seems as though the book was originally written in French, and then translated using Google Translator (and I wouldn’t doubt that this is true). If you know or have ever used Google Translator, you know that sometimes their translations are not exactly correct; they don’t always make sense. You’ll read sentences in this book that sound like a three-year-old wrote them. Overall, I did not care much for this book. It wasn’t overwhelmingly interesting nor did I gain a tremendous amount of knowledge. I would not recommend this book to anyone, except perhaps someone who reads it in French.
