Natasha Rebrova _atasha_ugust — while this book plays on some very stereotypical characters, the action and story line is sweet. It is very well written, and incorporates a very high level vocabulary for a children's novel.

Alvie J _lvie_arcia — what does sumo wrestlers have to do with cheating? and why do drug dealers still live with their moms? yup, that's the sort of eclectic and seemingly unrelated issues get paired up by the author. he's a distinguish economist, which makes it even more interesting cos he's not the usual nobel-prizey, idealistic type. the issues he considers are real and everyday happenstance that you may glance through the local papers, but never fathom the full extent of it. so... something different and tt's why its a fun read.

Andrew Richardson amr_design — This is an excellent book on ethics and cause quite a stir when it came out. It was a very fast read for a philosophy book. Interestingly, while most authors are great at criticism/deconstruction and not so good at building their own constructive arguments, the opposite is the case for MacIntyre in this book. I tend to agree more with his constructive picture of what virtue ethics is all about and disagree with his characterization of moral discourse in the modern west. On the constructive side, his great core ideas are on the relationship between social practices, institutions, virtues and intrinsic and extrinsic goods. This is a very rich picture with the capacity of integrating morality back into an analysis of historical change and progress - especially with reference to his internal goods/external goods distinction. Perhaps I'll write more about that later...
