Aditya Widihastono adityawns — I have to start out by saying that I think Mortensen's work (building schools for boys and [especially:] girls in the Muslim world) is important and vital. That said, I didn't come away from this book with a sense of Mortensen as a hero, but as kind of an asshole. He neglected the business side of the foundation he was charged with running so that it nearly went bankrupt (a board member, the wife of the man who endowed the foundation with a million dollars upon his death, ultimately distanced herself from the foundation); left his wife and young children to live paycheck-to-paycheck for months at a time to go to Pakistan and Afghanistan; and took stupid risks that could have gotten him killed a million times over. At one point, lying on the ground while rival drug traffikers had a firefight literally right above his head, Mortenson thought about how his wife would explain to his kids that their dad died building schools for kids and that thought, "made him feel good." Really? You felt good imagining how your wife would have to tell your kids you were dead? Jackass.

jessievu
Jessie Vu jessievu — Marvelous. In a way, it is similar to the Hunger Games, but it definitely takes a different spin. The characters are smart and funny and realistically flawed, which I think is important in young adult novels especially. There are lessons about selflessness and bravery, and though this is a dystopian novel, it is not too far from what could conceivably happen to any teenager wading through moral quandary. It is the first in a series, and I cannot wait to keep reading.

weareawake
Awake Studio weareawake — This mystery series is set in a coffee house in Manhattan. So, first and foremost, like coffee. Because this books goes into great detail about how to make various coffees, how to store them, and disses a little on tea drinkers and people who drink gas station coffee. The main character is likeable enough, however, I never really cared for her or the mystery. I was disappointed with the match making of her former mother-in-law, though I found her ex-husband likeable in a way. You never know the victim except through others and I never really cared all that much for the victim except to be sorry that she was the victim. I was slightly disappointed in the ending as there were basically two of them as another really disguised mystery was tossed in at the end. I’m told there are folks out there who enjoy the coffeeness of this series and some of the recipes/methods are at the end. I’m not one of them, basically because I don’t drink coffee. Ever. I’d recommend this series if you’re into coffee and underwhelming mysteries, but I won’t be reading any others in this series. I read the Nookbook edition of this book and there were some minor problems near the end with formatting.

Thomas Palmer palmer31je6936 — Blitzed through a weekend. Narrator grew on me. I loved the beginning, Bright Sand, the fully imagined world of the light and heavy crews, city killers, and Orleans iterations on the dystopian Gulf Coast. The rest felt more thinly imagined but still with a classic throwback feel through a Mad Max filter. What Treasure Planet wished it was. But this time Long John really was Jim's father.
