Alia Richardson tmillsluve6c72 — Having now read this and Star Maker there's a clear style to Stapledon's writing that is unique among the authors I've read, providing a connection between books that otherwise have nothing in common. Sirius is about the tragedy of the titular character, a dog engineered with human levels of intelligence (or even above the level of many people). He's not just a human in a dog's body though, at times a slave to canine impulses. As the only one of his kind Sirius is ultimately as alone as anybody can be, too human to fit in with the canine world but too canine to fit in among the humans, always striving to find his place. As with Star Maker it's a fascinating, memorable book.

Khoa Cao comichubble — I have always had a dread fascination with the demise of the Romanov dynasty, most especially with the Crown Prince and mysterious Anastasia. For a YA novel (which I don't read much of these days, I'll admit) I enjoyed this a lot more then I thought I would. Written from three different points of view (which I found a little distracting because only two were absolutely necessary) Anastasia, Anne, and Ethan (Ethan's point of view could have been left out or combined with Anne's honestly). I think the average teenager would enjoy this mix of action, history, and Russian mythology. Russia's royal family is protected by a secret brotherhood of magicians. When the Tzar and his family are herded down into the basement as sheep to the slaughter, the brotherhood magically compels the infamous, misunderstood Baba Yaga to save the youngest daughter, Anastasia. Ethan, together with Anne, must find a way to save Anastasia, and themselves from certain, mounting danger.

Dylan Shelton _ill_ess — There's something distinctly beautiful about a writer who can change their style of writing as their character's foundation and views change in the novel. Anthem was very well written. The characterization was very evident and good. The story was strong, yet a bit predictable, but I still enjoyed reading it.
