Abolfazl Hakimi hakimi — This is a difficult book to recommend, owing to its girth, abstruse narrative, occasional gruesome passages, and copius endnotes (which always seem to turn people away). However, it's also insightful, funny, and probably my second-favorite novel. David Foster Wallace is one of the most intelligent and most hopeful thinkers in the contemporary writing scene. If the Jest puts you off, start with his essays.

Barbara Kay _iara78 — This was my first book by Murakami and it sent me scurrying for anything else by the author. Since then, I've read three of his novels and he is fast becoming my favorite author. Others have told me that After Dark is not the one to start with but I think there is a lot to recommend it. The novel takes place between 12 midnight and six AM and is the series of conversations and events that connect several persons in this brief period. I believe the basic premise is that people become themselves during this time when most of society is sleeping. During the day we put on our masks but in the early hours of a new day we confront our real being. The main character is Mari, a 19 year old girl who is seen reading in a Denny's. She is soon joined by a jazz loving boy named Takahashi who knows Mari's sister Eri although it is never quite sure how well he knows her or how much he is fabricating. Eri herself is suffering from social withdrawal (In Japan this is known as Hikikomori) and has been in a long sleep. From this premise, begins a series of events that are wonderfully descriptive yet intentionally vague in meaning. The characters go on with their night time struggles while images from mirrors and television screens takes on their own life in a way reminiscent of a David Lynch film. Murakami sets up the reader as a dispassionate alien observer observing from afar. We cannot assist them but only observe even though as we yearn to help. This is definitely what I would call an Existential novel. Some readers may be put off by the lack of resolution. I would direct them to another Murakami novel such as Kafka By The Shore or The Wild Sheep Chase. However the readers who enjoy the art of writing and the psychological interactions of fictional characters who you can identify with, this would be a must-read.

Martine Richer _ioue_arts — ENCLAVE is fantastic. It was like a movie in my mind. For being a relatively short book, it covers A LOT and the journey is incredibly exciting. Deuce has worked her whole life to be a Huntress. It’s all she’s ever wanted. She’s brave and strong for a New Blood. She lives by the rules. Then she gets partnered with Fade (how cool is his name?!). He’s not like everyone else and Deuce isn’t sure how to deal with him. He makes her second guess everything she’s ever been taught and awakens a new understanding within her. I’m completely impressed with Ann Aguirre’s imagination and ability to create apocalyptic magic. I was enthralled by the story and attached to the characters. I’m rooting for them in every way. I’ll be anxiously awaiting the release of OUTPOST.

Arai Shamuratova araishamurat — A great idea that is mediocre in execution. One thing that surprised me was the sheer lack of diversity. Another thing that kind of surprised me was some of the more meanspirited entries didn't come with some final thoughts from the author. I expected something a lot more structured and in line with the readings I heard so much about. Most of these entties aren't even that "great" in the sense that really open a vein and expose the ridiculousness that is the teenage diaryist! I have the say the entry about Alexis Carrington was about the only one that had me on the floor laughing. I so was that girl with my fake business letters and my champagne dreams.

Tiago Spina tiagospina — The written Thursday Next has to sort out the problems that arise when the Real World Thursday Next goes missing.

Schmidt Réka schmdtrk — This is one I love reading to kids. They crack up.
