A good read. The language was pretty dense, but to be expected from the time period. And besides that, it was actually a pretty easy book to get into and get through (I'm always worried when I start a book that is 200 years old). The story is a classic tale of the humble good man how keeps getting screwed by the greedy evil guy(s). And the Vicar really gets beaten down by the jerk antagonists. I was impressed how well Goldsmith makes you love to hate the bad guys. Of course, the last chapter wraps it all up in a nice-neat-happy-ending, typical of the style. As this book is mentioned in soooo many other classics, I think it is well worth the time in order to understand all the other references, and a 4 star read to boot.

You may remember when I reviewed Ellison’s The Immortals back in October. Well, this is the next installment in the Taylor Jackson series and it’s just as spine tingling. Taylor is still a target for The Pretender, a serial killer who’s obsessed with her. She’s still stressed out after having killed a teenage murderer and she knows she’s not as sharp and observant as she needs to be. But there’s just so much going on in her life that it’s hard to take it all in, much less make sense of it. When mass murders take place across the U.S. - in trails leading straight to Nashville - Taylor learns they are somehow linked to The Pretender. She just doesn’t know how they relate to her, or when or how he will strike. What’s worse is discovering he’s been watching her closely for a long time and knows things about her personal life that endanger everyone she loves. J.T Ellison has hit another homerun with So Close the Hand of Death. She’s taken the shocking subject of serial killers, put her own twisted angle on it, and given us a taut thriller with equally taut underlying personal currents. If you haven’t read the previous books in the series, don’t worry, each book can stand on its own merits. But if you choose to go back and read from the beginning, it will certainly enrich the experience as well as provide hours of lovely, nail-biting tension. This is definitely a must read for all mystery/thriller aficionados.

ENCLAVE is fantastic. It was like a movie in my mind. For being a relatively short book, it covers A LOT and the journey is incredibly exciting. Deuce has worked her whole life to be a Huntress. It’s all she’s ever wanted. She’s brave and strong for a New Blood. She lives by the rules. Then she gets partnered with Fade (how cool is his name?!). He’s not like everyone else and Deuce isn’t sure how to deal with him. He makes her second guess everything she’s ever been taught and awakens a new understanding within her. I’m completely impressed with Ann Aguirre’s imagination and ability to create apocalyptic magic. I was enthralled by the story and attached to the characters. I’m rooting for them in every way. I’ll be anxiously awaiting the release of OUTPOST.

Wow! An excellent tale of mystery and intrigue! Christine was a bit wet to be honest, I don't like such weak female characters. I defintiely recommend this book. The dastardly Phantom was a menace yet capable of a Heathcliff like all consuming kind of love. I am suprised to find that this book isn't on the 1001 books to read before you die list. An interesting decision - in fact I have preferred this to many books that do feature on the list. But, that is the trouble with something so subjective and prone to change with time and views as literature.
