Eduardo Wallace photowallace — I think it made me want to go to another country and immerse myself there. Sigh. The book was good. The story gripping--I stayed up to some ridiculous hour of the morning to find out what happens. And it was worth it! Lovely story of what happens when a young man lets himself really love and act accordingly. During the first half of the book I was surprised that the language and all was as clean as it was. To be honest, it didn't fit with the image of Conor (who made himself sound a lot like the people I live around--nice, but very different values). This resolved itself at the end when he explained his quiet conversion to Christianity. I really liked this little section of the book-it was not in the slightest bit preachy, but instead it showed a little of what happens when we are converted. Over all a good memoir, a great look into current events in Nepal (nothing like a story to make new headlines come to life!), and a wonderful story of love and friendships.

With the help of his oath brother Keiro, an elderly Saipaient named Gildas, and a slave called Attia, Finn attempts to Escape from Incarceron. Claudia is on the Outside. Time is forbidden on the Outside. Nothing changes. Since the Years of Rage, the Outside has been stuck in a pseudo-medieval world. Everything must fit the time period, no advancements can be made. As daughter of the Warden of Incarceron, Claudia holds a position of high rank. Claudia was betrothed to Giles, heir to the Kingdom. But, when Giles died in a suspicious accident, Claudia was betrothed to Giles’ half-brother, Caspar. In order to escape a marriage to the odious new heir, Claudia must discover what really happened to Giles. With the help of her beloved tutor, Master Saipaient Jared, Claudia must learn the secrets of Incarceron. Incarceron switches between the views of Finn and Claudia, as they both search for their own Escape. In this not quite steam punk, not quite dystopian novel, Fischer tells the classic hero’s journey tale with an innovative twist. The plot is interesting because the concept is so original. The mix of half mechanical horrors in Incarceron with the fake ancientness of the Outside creates a unique set of dual settings. It can’t be steam punk, because it is in the future, not the past. But the Outside is living in the past with futuristic technology. It is more a dystopia, but not quite there either. Then, while attempting to understand the complex setting of the Outside, you have the Incarceron, this unfathomable living prison. Just knowing that the prison has its own emotions adds a whole other layer to the plot. It seems complex, right? But, the main issue I had with the book was that at certain points the plot was predictable. So, don’t let the complex setting scare you off. I give Incarceron 4 out of 5 stars. It really builds well, so it’s really good if you don’t mind a slow-building plot. Trust me, it’s worth getting to the end. If you are looking for something different, slightly serious, but still really exciting, Incarceron is the book for you.

Ladyslaw Queiroz ladsqueiroz — I think anyone who has seen the movie may have wished they read the book first. (But isn't that always how it is?) I found this book highly entertaining and addictive. Lauren Weisberger paints a picture of a world that I desperately would love to experience first hand. Admittedly, the characters other than Andrea Sachs are not tremendously developed (neither is Andrea, to be honest). The book is more of a novelty; it explores the inner-workings of an up-tight magazine in all the horrors you would expect. The people are pretty, vain, and ruthless. I would have preferred something more Ugly Betty-style, where the people seem cold-hearted but actually have character depth. But, I did take this to be a pretty accurate depiction of the magazine this book referenced to, and for that I give Weisberger props. I'd say it was a smash hit had I not read other things by her and realized she's always a whiney bitch.
