brunorodolpho
Bruno Rodolpho brunorodolpho — This is going to be a fun one. We can already tell. It's an alternate history, science fiction, space travel tale. Update: We listened to this whole book on a weekend trip. Unfortunately, I was sick, kept falling asleep and had to be filled in on what I missed. But, before that happened, I had already been sure of a five star rating. It was a lot of fun to listen to Larklight. The reader was excellent and the book full of wry British humor. It was vocabulary rich and amazingly written with the two main characters fully developed and very fun. I kept thinking how intelligent the author must be to have taken the Victorian belief system and their available knowledge and information and run with this novel. I have never read a book like this and I really enjoyed it. My oldest son gave it four stars because he thought things were cleaned up too quickly and easily. I stick with my five stars because of the creativity, the vocabulary and because it was very well-written! This was not a book with layers or with the battle of good and evil with a strong spiritual component, in my opinion, just fun and surprising and altogether worth reading!

Murat Böcü murat96cd82 — I was looking ridiculously forward to reading this book once I heard about it. The whole premise of love extending between two people throughout reincarnation really appealed to me for some reason. As soon as I started reading, I was so taken aback by how beautifully it was written. The writing, especially from Daniel's perspective, had such a poetic feeling to it. Though I loved the writing, I will say that it made it a slower read for me sometimes. The format of going back and forth between the present and the past worked well for the book because as I was eager for them to find each other in the present, learning about their past added to the suspense when finding out about the ways they were torn from each other. By the time I finished the book I sat saddened to have the book end because I wanted to know more. I hope we get to find out more about this couple in the future because if we don't, Brashares is such a tease!

_aqubo890
Ricardo Santiago _aqubo890 — The best way to describe Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is a well research account of the reintroduction of British Magic to England in the 19th Century. Susan Clarke’s style feels a bit like Charles Dickens crossed with Jane Austin and Clark’s use of language and stylistic accents from that period made me laugh more than once. The writing style isn’t superfluous, it tries, and succeeds, to make the book feel like it is a mid 19th century account of recent events instead of a 21st century historical fiction/fantasy novel. In Clarke’s England magic has a proud history with magicians ruling and playing pivotal roles in daily life. At the opening of the story the study of magic is seen as a noble profession slightly below law but above medicine and many gentlemen scholars consider themselves theoretical magicians. Theoretical magicians study magic, it’s history and effects, but don’t actually perform it. The only people who claim to perform magic are the charlatans seen on street corners performing tricks for change and are much lower on the social scale. All this changes when a gentleman near Yorkshire claims to be the first practical magician in a few hundred years. The book is broken into three approximately equal sections, each with numerous footnotes. The first deals with Mr. Norrell, a practical magician with the lofty goal of returning magic to England. We follow his progression from a reclusive scholar to a well known, if not well liked, magicians living in London. The second section deals with Jonathan Strange another gentleman who discovers a talent for practical magic and convinces Mr. Norrell to take him as his student. His was my favorite section seeing him become interested in magic, going to fight in the Napoleonic war and finally come to very different conclusions about magic than Mr. Norrell. The final section deals with John Uskglass, the Raven King; he was considered the first, and greatest, magician in England and a source of conflict between Strange and Norrell. The last section I felt was the weakest as it spends much more time dealing with secondary characters I wasn’t as invested in, but are admittedly important to the story’s plot. What I liked best about the story, apart from the writing style, was how believable the characters were. While neither Strange nor Norrell was completely likable I thought Clarke did a wonderful job of making their motivations believable and helping the reader understand, if not agree, with their thought process. With the number of reviews the book has I won’t go over the plot in detail but I will say I found the first two sections captivating, fun and engaging and was kind of let down by the last third of the book. I really enjoyed how the first section detailed the reintroduction of British Magic and the second section showed its practical applications during war and peace but the book’s ending dealing with faerie and the fulfillment of prophecy didn’t grab my attention as well. Still, the book was really enjoyable and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoys 19th century literature or magical realism. This is one of those books that shows how much the fantasy genre has grown up in the last 20 years and hopefully the sequel captures the same magic.

alessandrabotto
Alessandra Botto alessandrabotto — Didn't like this one as much as "A Screaming Eagle at Normandy". Not that it wasn't good, but I felt like it got away from the journal like approach of the first one. This seems to be the classic movie sequel or second album that strayed away from what brought it success and moved more towards the mainstream. There were some accounts of battles that Burgett didn't even take part in. I realize they were all part of an entire mission to sieze the road to Arnem and probably only told to give the reader an overall understanding of operation Market Garden. However, Burgett didn't paint the whole picture of Normandy and that book was much more interesting. Nevertheless, there are some amazing stories of house to house fighting and close calls with Nazi's that make the reader wonder how Burgett even survived to write these books. Then there are the true gems that make these books well worth the read. Burgett shares his accounts of what it was like to liberate small Holland cities and some interactions with the citizens. There is the clearing of houses while on patrol, the befriending of an abondoned dog, the 24 hour watch in waist deep water with a dead goat, and face to face encounters with Nazi's that yield the most unsuspecting outcomes. These accounts are what makes Burgett's books so interesting and rare, much like Sledge's "With The Old Breed". This is what you can't find in the books that give you the overall picture and strategy behind major battles.
