The two siblings have been feuding all their lives over a magical bow they need to keep night demons at bay. Duncan, Alana's captor, hopes he can trade Alana for the bow. Kinnon, Alana's intended, has no intention of giving it, or her, up. Stalemate. But neither brother could have predicted Alana would decide to choose her own fate... Alana isn't no longer chaste. Although she hopes for a kind husband, she also wants a lusty one. She knows that makes her a wanton, but she can't help it. Duncan isn't at all what she expected. He's dark and brooding, but he also takes care to see that she's comfortable. The contradiction surprises her. It also surprises her that she's falling in love with him. Duncan is determined to trade Alana for the bow...until she starts sharing his bed. Then he isn't sure he can give her up. This is a short story, but it was very engaging. I enjoyed all the characters, especially the brothers. They each see the other as the villain, but the situation isn't black and white. My only disappointment is how short the story was, and how the author left it. I hope she has plans to continue it in the future.

Valdo Peixoto valdopeixoto — I have hundreds of unread books sitting patiently upon my shelves. I am a compulsive book buyer. I made myself two pacts. First was to read the books that were recommended to me by my students this past term. Second, was I had to read 10 books off my shelf before I would be allowed to buy another (only exception being my book club's pick.) I walked into my office and this book, halfway down the stack, literally just jumped out at me. I was in the mood for a light read. I can equally enjoy what is so wrongly called "chick lit" along with literary classics. I'm eclectic that way. The book cover inspired my daughter to drone on about needing marshmallows, so that amused me (she's only 3.)--She's eaten half a bag over the past couple of days. As I started reading the book, I began to really enjoy it. The characters were real enough. Koomson has an easy style about her writing. I've rated this book really high and probably unfairly so. I have rated it this high because the book has resonated with me in ways most books never will. Reading along, I found myself in more than 4 different characters. Their stories were in many ways part of my same story, just different details and outcomes, of course. My life has been touched by the themes of this book. It gave words, often very eloquently, to only abstract thoughts and feelings. For me this book was like a very intensive therapy session. Who knew when I was looking for a book to digest quickly, as to meet my goal of reading 10 books before giving into my compulsion, I would close its final pages feeling like a stronger, more whole person. That's the power of reading for ya!

Ling Pai aaaaabbypad98f — I am a sucker for tales of old-timey Southerners, and after watching and loving both versions of the movie I had to find out if the book was as good as I hoped it to be. Well it was! Mattie Ross is a great narrator and had me laughing throughout the book with her matter-of-factness and quotations of Bible verses. Although it is a tale of retribution it really is a sweet story of a strong-minded fourteen-year-old girl trying to make things right in the world. I love this quote about the author: "Charles Portis could be Cormac McCarthy if he wanted to, but he'd rather be funny." A fun, quick read. Addendum: This is probably my favorite book of all time.
