D D higherhigh9627 — Ok, I co-authored two chapters, so yes, I think everyone should read it. But really, I don't get paid anything from it, but I thought it was interesting. Of course I would though, or else I wouldn't have devoted so much time. A group of us, along with the Center for Comparative Immigration studies at UCSD, interviewed nearly an entire town in rural Mexico. They were last interviewed 10 years before, right when the new border enforcement policies were taking effect in the US, so we had a benchmark to check to see how migration patterns and attitudes had or had not changed. My favorite conversations did not make it in the book, but maybe someday. They were with an older woman who remembered the last group who came to interview. She was one of the few who stayed behind, because nearly everyone leaves this town. As I was told, the only reason you wouldn't leave is because you are too old, too sick, or "too female". Money is sent back from the US, paying for the satellites dishes, the one mansion, etc. I was told it is the elderly who take turns sweeping the streets, or else it would never get done. One man who is working to get his green card has not been to the US in 6 years (or else it would halt the process if he's caught) and his daughters are growing up without him here. He told me quite literally that during most of the year, you could "take a dump" in the middle of the street and it wouldn't matter. No one is there to see. (Except you'd probably be the one who had to clean up anyway.)

Aayush Parmar parmaraayu4b3a — This is a good guide -- particularly if you are interested in Senior Photography. The focus was on correcting problems (weight, baldness, acne, ect) using lighting, posing and digital software. The very last chapters on digital retouching had some great ideas for those wanting to learn more about Photoshop retouching steps.

Estefany Perez estefanypmb2e7 — I really went back and forth between four and five stars on this one, but in the end a few things made me decide to pull back a bit. In my eyes, a five-star book is practically perfect and, although Poison Study came close, there are a few (small!) flaws. But first, the good: I think the strongest thing Poison Study has going for is the protagonist, Yelena. On paper, she doesn't initially seem starkly different from most YA female protagonists...she's an orphan, apparently has some kind of latent magical power, and is implied to be pretty (when she's not being jailed or beaten up). What's interesting is that Yelena actually evolves and changes so that, by the end of the novel, she's a stronger and more confident person. Prior to the novel, Yelena has been raped, tortured, and imprisoned, to the point where she looks at herself as more of a rat than a person: Like a rat, my only hope of escape was to find a hole to hide in. As the novel progresses, Yelena trains and learns to fight, and as a direct result of being able to defend herself, she becomes more confident and assertive, which I liked seeing in a female character. The world development is also very strong here, and does an excellent job of drawing you in. Yelena currently lives in a military society run by a mysterious man called the Commander, who is unsurprisingly rigid and pretty ruthless. Ms. Snyder does a very good job of juxtaposing the current dictatorial society to the previous monarchy, and to be honest, neither society comes out looking like the good option. They're both pretty flawed, and I'm curious to see where some of the societal issues will go in the next two books. Now, the not-so-good parts: despite her increased resiliency and independence, Yelena still relied on Valek, the Commander's assassin and Yelena's love interest, too much for my liking. She also seemed to have some blinds spots where Valek was concerned (at one point, she wonders why he doesn't fight off eight armed men single-handedly!) so I'm not sure she's seeing him for who he is, exactly. Still, there was a serious lack of insta-love, thank God, so I'm willing to wait and see where this goes in the next book. And the ending, while not a cliff-hanger, doesn't really wrap things up. (view spoiler) All in all, I definitely plan to continue the series. Poison Study isn't without its flaws, but the strengths did a good job distracting me from them.

Elif Dikmen nejlaelf — this was one of the best books that i have read in a really long time. at first i was scared to read a book about such a sad subject. it's about a highschool shotting and all the people involved from the shooter to the grieving parents. i was also concerned for the similarities between this fictional story and the real-life happenings of columbine high school. however, i went ahead with the book and could not be happier. well, not "happy". the book was tragic! my heart literly hurt with sadness for these fictional characters. i am the mother of a soon-to-be high school student and i will have to add school shotting to my list of worries for my son. what a world we live in!
