I really enjoyed this book. It's the story of an angel who didn't fall, but left Heaven of his own will. He now lives among us as a private investigator. He retains some of his angelic skills - invisibility at will, superior senses, able to speak any language - and occasionally busts out with the might of Heaven behind him. What's the problem? His wife is dying, his last case ended tragically, and the end of the world is about to happen because the Angel of Death is missing. It's up to Remy to put it right.

I had no idea what to expect from this book. To be perfectly honest, I purchased it on my Nook Color because it was an interactive book with videos, etc. It was better than I expected. It is a small history about Harry Potter fandom, how it grew, what happened with fan web sites, fan books, fan arguments over HP canon, and everything else in between. The book's author was (and perhaps still is) a writer/employee of one of the largest HP fan sites on the internet, The Leaky Cauldron. There are several excellent chapters which detail the rise of the Potter novels from the first book being published and everything it went through to get to the printed page, to how word got out about it when it was first released. There is an extensive interview with J.K Rowling (who also writes the forward), along with details about meeting members of the cast from the films. I am a fan of the Potter books and movies, but not a die-hard, know every thing type of fan. And yet, I found this book interesting. So, I can imagine it safe to say that if you are a die-hard fan of the Potter books and movies, you'll love this book.

Peter Clines does what I thought to be a near-impossible feat here- he breathes new life into the well-past-it's-expiration-date zombie story by combining it with an almost equally tired trope, the superhero team. Clines makes the smart decision to throw us into the middle of the story. The zombies have risen, and the superheros already have their origins. This is my least favorite part of both of these kinds of stories- the need to explain just how the superheroes/zombies came to be. Clines smartly chooses to skip this, and only gives us details about each of the different heroes after he has already piqued our interest. He's also managed to introduced an entire super-team's worth of super-guys and super-gals in one short novel, along with telling an interesting story that never gets weighed down in exposition or arbitary plotting. I just now realized there's a sequel, and I'm excited to check it out, even though 'Ex-Heroes' stands on its own. It manages to leave you wanting more not by introducing frustrating cliffhangers or series-long 'mysteries', but by telling a compelling story in a fresh way.

I was really excited when I first heard that Stephen King was compiling a book about his favorite short stories that have been turned into films. I hoped and prayed for something that was a cross between On Writing and the ever so classic and insightful Danse Macabre -- but alas, what King fans get is a reprinting of five previously published stories. Once I got over my initial (crushing) disappointment, I realized that the old stories are at least introduced by King, and these short intros are new. So at least that's something. Furthermore, the five stories he has selected are oldies but goodies, as the saying goes. Readers unfamiliar with King's shorter works now have a chance to see that not everything the master writes is of door-stop length. When he has a mind to, King can embrace shorter but sweeter and do a fine job. Anyone who hasn't read Rita Hayworth & the Shawshank Redemption is in for a real treat. If you haven't seen Frank Darabont's adaptation starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins rent it tonight! You won't regret it. It's wonderful, and not horror, but dramatic and sad and beautiful and hopeful.
