Every chapter of this memoir, which provides a glimpse on the human side of Bush Jr., also deals with the major themes in his presidency. I have to be honest here: the main reason I decided I want to read this book is because I would like to see what he has to say about his war in Iraq; and how his initial expectations of finding S. Hussein's nonexistent Weapon of Mass Destruction turned into one of his biggest flops. He had his justifications that S. Hussein's was a dangerous regime, of course. However, one could not help but wonder why the American military had not similarly liberated Iran and North Korea from their respective tyrannies, two dangerous countries equally capable of inciting discord and endangering American lives. Only several pages were dedicated to the Iran and North Korea issue. I only wished he had elaborated more; at the very least he could have defined what kind of framework does USA have to build in the future to defuse the threats of those two rogue entities. The financial crisis which most of the public dub as the main 'failure' of his presidency was also one of the main discourse of this book. Before the September 11 hit, he had foreseen the internet bubble burst , when he introduced tax cuts to ordinary Americans. It did hit him hard before he even had his one-year anniversary as a president though: Soon after the September 11 tragedy, "the Dow Jones plunged 684 points, the biggest single-day drop in history at that point". Which is why he could not stress the importance even better: the less success the terrorist organizations could achieve in threatening the world stability, the better. And somehow he does quite a convincing job in explaining how the victories of kicking Taliban out of the Afghan throne make the Middle East a more stable place. Nonetheless, he also highlighted some of his (less publicized) legacies, such as signing the No Child Left Behind policy, modernizing the Medicare system, fighting the global AIDS, and helping secure the framework for the admission of several Eastern European nations into NATO. Some of his accounts, which at times can be quite subjective, could turn out to be poignant stories too. Regardless of what you think of his presidency, it can be assured that this book will not be a disappointing read, especially for American history buffs.

My thoughts: It is always interesting to read about real people in history that are relatively unknown. Susanna and John did live and meet. But all the intrigues made up around this story are the works of imagination, perhaps and who knows. This book is a nice mix of romance and intrigue. Susanna is sent to the court as a painter until her brother gets there, but she is a good artist on her own (though sadly nothing seems to be left of her work, we have only 2nd story sources). There she gets involved by accident in a dangerous plot to usurp the kingdom. Poor Susanna, she loved to paint and I liked how she saw the beauty in everything and just wanted to sit down and catch it in a sketch. She also had a good head on her shoulder and that is truly needed here. She is a damsel in distress, but at the same time not because she will fight back. But she would have been dead at once if it had not been for our hero John Parker. He saves her from murder attempts while he tries to figure out who is behind the scheme to take the throne. John is strong, smart and in the end I like him because I know he would do anything to protect the woman he is falling for, even go against a king if necessary. The plot thickens and makes this a real adventure. Because even if you catch one guy you still gotta find the man to controls everything. And trust me, they do not have it easy, because they will fight for their lives. I did mind one thing though, I felt at one time that enough was enough. There was no point in trying to kill poor Susanna any more since she had truly said all she knew. There are also more books coming and that makes me intrigued. First, there is a good ending so do not worry about cliffhangers or anything like that (and it is a happy one too). But I guess there will be another court intrigue to come since there sure were a lot back then. And especially with a king like this. Conclusion: I enjoyed the intrigues and the look at this court we all know so well. The romance was good and it was just a very short, easy and enjoyable book to read.

Peaches, a fiction by Jodi Lynn Anderson, has quickly become one of my favorite books. A friend gave it to me because her mom gave it to her and she didn’t want to read it. It looked interesting so I decided I would read it, and my friend missed out. The novel starts with a short chapter that gives a little background to unlock the story. These chapters reoccur frequently through the novel and give those “Aha!” moments. Then it moves into the life of Murphy McGowen, a brown haired, green-eyed bombshell who is misunderstood, lost and has infinite trust issues. She breaks into the Darlington Orchard house and steels a bottle of liquor, only to be caught. For punishment, she is sent to work at the orchard picking peaches over Spring break. There she meets Birdie Darlington, a shy farm girl whose father owns the orchard, and Leeda Cawley-Smith, Birdie’s perfect, rich cousin. All three girls work together on the orchard and eventually break down Murphy’s trust wall, Leeda’s obsessive compulsive perfection problem, and Birdie’s insecurities. They help each other through bonding experiences like transforming Birdie into a beautiful woman, Leeda standing up to her mother, and Murphy finally letting her guard down. All three girls come back to work on the orchard over summer. There were many dramatic situations in the novel, like when Murphy stole Leeda’s boyfriend: Rex. Red is and average, (not rich), guy who fixes cars and has the same sarcastic attitude as Murphy. The two girls work through it eventually. Birdie falls in love with a Mexican farm worker, Enrico, over the summer. He and his friends and family work and live at the orchard over the Summer and then return to Mexico when the season is over/ At the end of the novel, Birdie goes on a road trip with Leeda and Murphy to tell Enrico how she really feels. But does he love her too? You’ll have to read and find out! The central conflict in this novel is man vs. himself in that all three teenagers try to find themselves and are unsuccessful until they find each other. All three have a constant struggle being the person everyone else wants them to be and who they really are. Picking the perfect peach represents each girls’ search for happiness. They all came to the orchard ready for something better than what they had. Murphy with her looks, Birdie with her brains, and Leeda with her money. By the end of the summer all three girls can “pick the perfect peach,” and have become parts of each other. Jodi Lynn Anderson has a compelling way of captivating the audience, and there is never a dull moment. The writing is easy to read, flows well, and the descriptions are never overdone. Everything is written to perfection. With each word, Anderson draws you in more. I would relate her style to Stephenie Meyer’s. I found the main theme in the novel to be: be loved for who you really are, not who people want you to be. Each of the girls allowed society to mold them into something they weren’t until they found each other. Once they were friends, their shells came off and their real, beautiful colors showed. I would recommend this book only to girls between to ages of 12 and 35 because the plotline is on that other people couldn’t relate to and wouldn’t enjoy. I loved this book, and only wish it was longer. Luckily for me, there is a sequel!
