A candid account of the author's life in the Adirondack wilderness. This is the first book of Anne LaBastille's I have read and it left me wanting to read more of this authors work, which is the best recommendation I can give.

Haven't done this in a while; shelved it before finishing. He writes well; really well but I just wasn't getting into it. It was too far in the past for me I think, 1995 or so. And the protagonist just wasn't that interesting a character to sustain my focus. At least I finished the first part of the book which broken up into three parts. It was becoming to much of a chore so it's abandoned. Maybe I'll check one of his newer books; you can see why this was publicized debut but then again, there just aren't that many Icelandic writers working in his sort of lyrical fiction genre. Oh well, I was warned.

(Spoilers) First of all, I saw the movie way before I ever read this book. Wow, nothing alike. I thought it was a good story, but far too slow. I loved seeing the results and hallucinations of Gull's plunge into insanity, but really, did there need to be a whole chapter on his rambling of the significance of several geographical points in London and why we cannot live in a female-dominated society, blah blah blah? Do I understand the point that Moore was trying to make? Yes. Do I necessarily like the way Gull's "philosophy" is laid out for the reader? Not particularly. I thought it could have been far more succinct. The novel lost some steam at the end after the death of the last victim.

This book is awesome! Tells you everything you need to know about starting a garden using very little space or work. He also tells you how to use his special soil so you don't have to worry about tilling or fertilizer. These square foot gardens were already at our house when we bought it, and I am so excited to start planting in a few weeks. Everyone who wants to garden should read this book!

This book is part of a series created by an American author, Rick Riordan to help teach his son about Greek Mythology. It is a story about Percy Jackson who is a Demi-God, which is someone who is half God and half Human. His human mother met Poseidon, God of the seas, and they fell in love and had Percy. However Percy does not know his father is a God until he is attacked by a Fury on a field trip to the museum. This is because of a law passed by the head God Zeus banning Gods from having contact with their Demi-God children. The story revolves around someone stealing Zeus’s weapon: the lightning bolt, which causes unrest amongst the Gods. Unluckily for Percy, everyone thinks he stole it. As the story continues, Percy comes to embrace his powers, making new friends and embarking on dangerous Quests to try and find the bolt. It is a fantastically well-written book that keeps you hanging on the edge of every word trying to guess what will happen next. The 21st Century update that Riordan gives to the Greek Gods also makes it current and entertaining. The 2007 film version of this book was also used as a tool during my work experience to aid children’s understanding of Greek mythology. After watching some of the film during an English lesson, I had to see how it compared to the book and so took the book home. Needless to say the book is (as always) far better than the film! There are some chapters that are missed out and/or changed as Hollywood always does. I took the book home and read it in one night, it was that good! Definitely geared towards older readers, maybe the more advanced KS2. However, it is nevertheless an excellent book, I now need to get the rest of the books out of my attic to read and see how the journey continues!
