While this book has many of the same strengths as Myer's Fallen Angels, to which this is meant to be a sequel, I would strongly recommend this one for today's audiences. They do not need to be read in order or even both read, although the comparison between the Vietnam War and the Iraq War via the pair is pretty interesting. However, while the Vietnam War was possibly the first occurrence of this type of modern warfare wherein the invading Americans attempt to be human and protect the native peoples with rather mixed success, the Iraq War still speaks to what are troops are going through now in Iraq and other Middle Eastern counties. Myers is not only a good writer, fleshing out the characters primarily through extremely natural feeling dialog that occasionally deepens into something beautifully potent and keeping a feeling of action while still depicting the times of boredom and avoiding overwhelming the reader with either (on a random side note, whenever a book gets repetitively boring, my husband and I have started to refer to it as "camping" a la Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a term thankfully not needed for this book), but he speaks about what the soldiers are going through in a respectful but thoughtful way that manages to both question these wars, affirm the (noble?) motivations of those fighting them, and portray the native residents as real people worthy of respect. This piece is a rather wonderful investigation into how we are fighting wars and how we would like to fight wars that I would really encourage many Americans to read. The book has been marketed as a teen book and feels a little adult at first glance but while it would be just as engaging for adults, I think that Sunrise Over Fallujah really does speak to young men and women who are questioning what they want to do in life like Robin and hits at an important time for developing awareness of other peoples and places as well as how their country interacts with those people and places.

Epic. As usual, George does an incredibly well-researched job of portraying history's "bad guys" as human beings. Here, she writes from Henry VIII's perspective, giving him a personality and a heart rather than simply a penchant for beheading ex-wives. Anyone with a historical background in the era will be excited about the sheer amount of fact-based detail she puts into the book - at the end, she lists some of her sources for further reading (most are scholarly).

Although I was aware of the sudden influx of Hmong immigrants into Minnesota when I was living there in the late 80’s, I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t know much about them until I read this book. Kao Kalia Yang was born in a refugee camp in Thailand and emigrated with her family to St. Paul, eventually growing up to attend Carleton College. This is both her story, of the immigrant child trying to fit in, but even more it is the story of her family. She is raised with the stories of her family’s past: her grandmother’s hard life raising 10 children, the persecution of Hmong by North Vietnamese soldiers, her family’s escape into the Laotian jungles, where they lived on the run for four years before a final crossing into Thailand. She writes movingly about the Hmong people’s lack of written language and her attempt to rectify this by recording the stories that were bequeathed to her.
This was a moving book.I was touched by betty's courage to save herself and her daughter from a madman.

Terrific premise and the photos alone tell the story with their haunting images. I was positively enthralled with this novel at the beginning, but felt that it lost a bit of steam (and structure) by the end. I was expecting a horror novel or ghost story, but it ended up resembling "X-Men" stories (which I don't dislike by any means, but it was a sharp turn from the first pages). The book is worth reading for the spooky and unsettling photos, though.
