It took me some time to get reaquainted with Sookie and her friends, because it had been a while since I read book number 8. Then it was fun to do so, even if it is quite a violent book.

This is the first time I've read any of Wyndham's short stories and my overall take on it is I can see why he is remembered more for his novels. There are some quite good stories in here. I particularly liked "Opposite Number", Wyndhams attempt to grapple with the complex subject of parallel universes, and "Dumb Martian" that is quite unusually written from the point of view of the antagonist. To his credit, the author attempts to explode some ridiculously dated views of women in many of these stories. Views so ridiculous that one would not even bother sending them up nowadays. Then again, in other stories that didn't focus on feminist themes, his own intrinsic prejudices about women linger not far below the surface. Some of the stories just come across as quite dated and obvious the the modern reader, valuable as little more than historical curiosities but none of them are terrible and probably worth a read, especially to Wyndham fans.

The suspense was to die for! I love that Mary Higgens Clark throws some creative turns of event into it, you never know until the end exactly who did it, or is doing it. I give this book 5/5 :)

I remember perfectly where I was when I read this book. I had just arrived in France to spend my junior year of college abroad and I was feeling very alone. But this book completely transported me. When I reached the end I wanted to turn to the first page and start reading it all over again; it was that good. I won't say it's a particularly easy read. Nabokov makes you work to read all his books (except for Lolita) and sometimes I just need that extra work when I'm reading. And maybe it's having to really think about what I'm reading makes me enjoy it all the more because I don't feel like such a passive recipient of a good story. In any event, I don't actually remember what the book is about at all. Just that it was amazing. I should probably re-read it.

Of the three Cara Black mysteries I've read thus far, this is my favorite. Aimee's longing for her mother, for any information about her past, makes her reckless and vulnerable. The writing is becoming more assured. I am very much enjoying this series!

This is one of the two most thoughtful and persuasive books I've read (along with Slaves, Women, and Homosexuals by Webb) on the issues surrounding the role of women in ministry. Sumner is an ideal writer to speak to both sides of this debate. She is an egalatarian, but openly disagrees with some of the common interpretations and conclusions. Her exegesis is very thoughtful, and the autobiographical way in which she writes is very compelling. Especially noteworthy is her take on 1 Timothy 2, and on "headship" as a picture rather than as a definition. This is a very honest wrestling with the issues. Highly recommended!
