Would recommend: Probably not Sigh. I really wanted to like this one. For much of Muriel Barbery's first book, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, I was alternately bored and confused, but at the end, it all made sense and struck me as so beautiful. So then I reserved this second book from the library without any investigation, assuming that I might have a similar experience. Well, okay, I did. Again, I was alternately bored and confused, but there was no redeeming ending for me. It's clear that Barbery is a skilled writer, but this book was so erudite and over my head that I failed to have any enjoyment in it. I'm really disappointed. I hope I'm not too dumb for this book, but I suppose that's a possibility.

I really wanted to like this book, but I couldn't. For an author who created such great characters in the Traveling Pants books, the characters here fell disappointingly flat. Overall just a depressing tale.

The first part of this book is extremely hard to get through, but I really liked it. Very interesting. Try reading it over again and put the characters into the animals that he names at the end and see what really might have happened. It turns into a very different story.

I really enjoyed this book. True, most of us would never get a chance to take a year to find ourselves. Even so, I enjoyed Elizabeth's journey... I found her warm, witty and intelligent. It was truly an enjoyable read.

This book always makes me cry, and so does the movie. I am a huge animal lover, all animals (except spiders yeah get those away from me) and this is a wonderful book for animal lovers. It's the tale of a family with a dog, how the dog changes the family and even if the dog misbehaved and ruined some things, he was still a member of the family with a fierce loyalty to the family. I hate when people treat animals like they are something they can throw away. Animals are sometimes way better than people and deserve all the love. This story makes me laugh, cry, and make me miss my littler fur balls. I lost 3 of my pets in less than a year, each one extremely hard on me and I felt so emotionally drained after each one and it's nice to read a story where I am able to remember the good and bad from each pet and read that someone went through the same emotions I went through for each lost. 5/5

This is the second Fitzgerald I've read and I have to conclude she doesn't resonate with me. I can see the comparison to Turner paintings. The book is awash in color, emotions, thoughts smeared all together. A few of the characters such as Tilda, the young girl, who's so at home on the water and whom nothing seems to faze, stands out. Some of the adults, such as her parents, need to be throttled though. I wanted to scream at them to `grow up'. Fitzgerald won the Booker for this book so I have to conclude there's something wrong with me rather than the book. After all they don't give Booker's out to every Tom, Dick or Salman!
