Pretty good. I haven't read her before and it was neat to read about stuff that I knew - her books are set in Baltimore. I wouldn't have guessed the twist at the end. I read the book knowing the twist, and still couldn't pick out how I would have picked that up while reading. An easy read, but intriguing, nonetheless.

Beautifully written. Exquisite language, wonderful character development, fascinating structure. It is clear why this book is considered a classic; even in translation, it is one of the best-written books (if not THE best-written) that I have ever read. However, this is all wasted on a silly plot, detailing the frivolous and stupid lives of the rich and high-class of Russian society in Napoleon's time. Like reading a beautifully written celebrity magazine.

It's rare that I rate a book before I'm done reading it, or that I give five stars to any book, let alone a political one (I've liked a a lot of them, it's just that they aren't timeless), but I'm going to make an exception here. Mark Steyn has been compared to Cyrano de Bergerac, and it's really no exaggeration.

Mixed feelings invade at this moment, having finished this beast. And it is a beast, emotionally and physically. At just under 1500 pages, the tome packs a punch in time and effort. That is why I struggled in deciding whether I really love this work or hate it. My feelings about the length almost reveal a more juvenile response in pure concern about "my time" being wasted. However, Richardson's opus magnum is very good and I can "almost" ponder coming back to this at a much later date. A good portion of the beginning is spent on character development and it can get a trite sloggy and boggy. Tenacity may be what pays off with this one, if due only to its length and the compelling story contained within.
