Having a son with autism I found it necessary to pick up this book. The main character has autism, and it was written by a man who has worked with autistic people. This is a very good book, and gives an insight to the workings of the mind of a young child with autism.

I liked it. What a great love story. I wasn't hooked from the first sentence - it took a few to get oriented with all the back and forth and such, but once I was hooked I was way hooked. Henry goes back and forth in Time - meeting Clare when she is very young, and visiting her from the future until they meet in the present and marry and spend their life together. He time travels, she waits. It's unique and beautiful.

The war in southern Sudan that Deng (the narrator: he told his story to Eggers, who wrote the book as a fictionalized memoir) is a survivor of lasted for more than twenty years, from 1983 on. Trapped between two forces, the civilians, Deng included, had no place to turn. To me, one of the most affecting parts of the story was that some people wanted to believe that the government was there to protect them even after it became clear to most that they were on their own. Those who did try to flee to Khartoum were killed or enslaved. Although Deng's sympathies lay with the SPLA, they were little, if any, better about protecting civilians, and were brutal to soldiers and deserters. Eggers' interweaving of past and present in the narrative could easily seem ham-fisted, but in this case it worked for me. He is clearly trying to keep the story relevant to the present, so the reader won't think, "Oh, well, good thing that war is over and Valentino made it out okay."

This is one of my all-time favorites just because she's hilarious. I love how she keeps track of how many cigarettes/drinks she has and how much weight she's (not) lost. It kept me laughing and interested, always a good combo.

All my friends were talking about this. I think I was the last to read it. It was well-written, suspenseful, and a quick read.

A National Jewish Book Award winner, this book explores the importance of food in creating memories and connecting family. It makes me miss my mother-in-law and her amazing challah, kugel, matzoh ball soup.....
