I would give this book 5 stars on just the character of Briony alone - she's so young and selfish and in her own world in the beginning, a coltish girl with a mean edge who believes what she sees and takes it as face value, because to her, her own perception is the only true reality. How she changes, or perhaps doesn't change, is so interesting given what the consequences of her youthful actions were. Another thing that's so engrossing is how within the novel there is such a slipperiness of truth, how everything is cobbled together from separate fragments and different viewpoints, so you're constantly wondering how the events really unfolded. McEwan really has a way with words, everything is beautifully simple and at the same time incredibly descriptive, and each of the three main characters are fully realized to the point where you don't really need an explanation as to which one is speaking at any given moment - they just are. Heartbreaking and amazing.

I read this for a class, and it really got me thinking about the female body and the medical establishment. Definitely recommend this book!

Hypersmart and geeky high school senior Josh creates an anonymous website to preach anti-materialism, anti-consumerism, and keepin' it real in general to the masses. His "Gospel According to Larry" blog generates more interest than Josh had ever anticipated, including lots of attention from his best friend Beth that he's crushed on since sixth grade. Josh finds himself in the awkward position of co-founding the Larry fan club at his high school with Beth, and things continue to get stranger from there. I wish this had been around when I was in high school. Great book- I'm looking forward to reading the sequels.

I read most of this for a weekly discussion group/class, but probably won't finish it. Everyone has stories and theories about brain drain, but there's very little quality research on how/why it happens, its global impact, or how its patterns can be altered (if they even should be). Our discussion group had hoped this book, as well as the Tanner brain drain book, would offer some pertinent, statistically rigorous data, or at least present a framework for investigating the topic; however, we were rather disappointed. Tanner's technique involved postulation of radical opinions with a sprinkling of statistics, while Kapur drew tenuous assumptions from a vast, loosely connected collection of data and anecdotes. I did learn a lot of interesting facts about global migration/labor markets/immigration law from Kapur, but the mish-mash of information and theories left me feeling confused and dubious about which policy options benefit the developing world, or even the global economy. I suppose what I support now is the creation of a Brain Drain Information System/Analysis Project so we can begin to have a serious and informed discussion on the subject. Anyone need a thesis topic? :-)

It's a little slow at the beginning, but picks up. Lots of good gratuitous sex scenes. Interesting but not altogether unpredictable twist.

I did not like this book...at all. And I even read it when I was 13. Just not good.

Though the overall plot was good and well thought out, the characters suffered from over complexticity providing too many charaters confined in such few pages, and repeated descriptions between them. The beginning would turn down many readers for the confusion over these such characters in a realivily short-lived introduction. The language perhaps that of a 10th grade level repeated many phrases and words sometimes sentence after sentence. I give credit to the writer but I see places where much improvement could have been made.

My oldest sister was great at giving me books when I was growing up that challenged me and helped me think beyond the confines of my small town. This was one of those books.

After completing "Middlesex" by Eugenides I am feeling really mixed about my review. What I loved: This is a story that follows several generations of one family (one of my favorite plot lines). I enjoy growing up with a family and learning about how family history influences characters. I also enjoy contemporary American historical fiction; the details about immigration from Turkey to Detroit and then the examination of being Greek in the midwest, and of course the history of Detroit (car industry, race riots, etc.) as a backdrop to the storyline. I also liked the inclusion of the medical/psychological scenes when Calli's body is being studied. I haven't researched this yet, but I plan to find out if the doctor in the story is real and if the doctor really published reports on someone like Calli. What I didn't love: it was so long and overly detailed. There were times I would roll my eyes or groan out loud in impatience. I wanted Eugenides to hurry up and get to what I was interested in (i.e., Calli's emotional reaction to her physical condition and her discovery of sexuality). Also I listened to this as an audio book and had some issues with the voice and inclusion of music. The reader tried to sound Greek at times but occasionally sounded Jewish or like a Brooklyn-nite. Every so often, the producers included music to fade out or into a track on the CD but it was never well placed. Sometimes in faded in and out of the same scene. I just didn't get it. Overall, this was a good book. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it instead of listening to it. I would recommend this book to someone who also likes stories about family geneology and American history. And to those who are open minded, and curious about the lives of those who are marginalized and misunderstood.
