This is a great book that I highly recommend. I read it a few years ago and it is still with me. Having just finished "Twisted River" I thought of this book regarding the 9/11 references. The New York feel in the book is so true it engulfs you.

I have loved some of Erskine's previous books, especially Lady of Hay, but this one fell flat. The historical part was more interesting than the present day story, but I was turned off by all the Jesus stuff.

I've read this book a zillion times. It's one of my favorite books, as is Gone With The Wind. I actually enjoy this book a lot more than GWTW. The last time I read this book was probably 4-5 years ago, so I decided to read it again. I don't know why, but I didn't like it this time. I mean, I still enjoyed it, and everything was as I remembered... Maybe it's my mood. I feel sad. The book is an adventure, and it's an amazing adventure, but it's also sad. So much time wasted, so much frustration and longing and sadness. I just feel sad. It's probably just me. I've read this book so many times and I've always loved it. It's only this time that I feel sad.

Read this in college and re-read it in a day this time as I ran into it on my bookshelf. Enjoyed it just as much this time around. It's amazing to think that a book as old as this one is still relevant, bawdy, and funny.

I picked up this book for the classroom library based entirely upon interesting cover art and the Sue Monk Kidd quote on the cover (I'd just finished The Secret Life of Bees). Definitely shows how you can't judge a book by its cover. A father sends away one half of his twins who has Down syndrome, telling the mother the baby died in hopes of sparing the her the grief of dealing with the baby's disability. But instead the mother's grief over the baby's supposed death makes life terrible for everyone for years and years. Everyone is haunted by this choice forever and ever and twenty years later everything is still awful. OKAY. I GET IT. This book could have been about two hundred pages shorter and I would have liked it a lot more.
it is a book that every body should read in his or her life .

This is a fabulous read! Really builds on the excitment of the first ascent of Everest. I think this is a must read for anyone who has an interest in mt. climbing or just plain adventure - so exciting!

Ummm...I don't quite know what to make of this book. The author was witty and I enjoyed her take on creating 'recipes' out of life situations, but her constant whining about being single at the age of 36 just killed me. There is more to life than wanting a man.

I'm a Giver fan, but I was disappointed by this book.
