So I actually saw the movie on Masterpiece Theatre first and I fell in love with the story so I thought I should finally read the book. In general, the book is pretty good - kind of slow in some spots, but heart wrenching in others. However, I think this is one of the first times I actually liked the movie better. But bravo to Charlotte Bronte for making a story good enough to fit on screen!

It would be easy to dismiss this book before reading it because of superficial similarities to Harry Potter, but Stroud ultimately offers a very different story. The first volume starts off strong, and Bartimaeus is a hilarious character. Stroud's use of multiple narrative perspective works quite well.
