Jager does a good job of putting us in the shoes of the participants in this legal struggle, while also providing the context to make the story relevant. There is some level of speculation involved, since he is trying to get inside the heads of the participants. However, the difference between speculation and what he could deduce from written evidence is generally clear. This is also one of those annoying books where you have to keep checking for endnotes in the back because they are not marked. Overall I quite liked it, although I have to say that the title is misleading - this is the last judicial duel in the royal courts of France, not the last judicial duel in Europe (I don't think it's even the last duel in France).

So, I probably read all of Pike's books three times in middle school, and I won't rate / review them all, but this one was particularly good. Anyone wanting to revisit their childhood reads would do well to start here.

A memoir of a young African American woman growing up in a predominantly Latino San Jose, California neighborhood. I just finished this book and found the last 1/3 to be bizarre. It wandered and jumped around to the point that I wanted to stop reading it, but the first 2/3 were full of interesting observations.

** spoiler alert ** I love the Harry Potter books and this one was no different. I loved the story and how the characters developed. It was great to see Harry evolve and learn more about Dumbledore and Voldemort through his private lessons. Plus, we were able to see the Weasley's Wizarding Wheezes joke shop finally become a reality.

I was open to the idea of reading another book by Stephenie Meyer since I enjoyed the Twilight saga. I was especially excited that this book was suposed to be "for adults". As far as where the adult content was in the book is lost on me. I thought it was an easy read, and the most risque parts only involved kissing. Tisk-tisk! During the first 200 pages I couldn't concentrate on the book, which tells me what I wasn't as engaged as I normally am. By page 300 I wanted to give up altogether. At page 400 I was finally consumed by the story and trying to figure out how the crazy love square would end. And go figure, just like the Twilight saga, everything ends up peachy keen! Everyone gets their fairytale ending, which I can't say disappoints me but if Stephenie is only going to write love stories with happy endings this will be the last book of hers I will buy. All in all, I love Ms. Meyer's descriptions of the surroundings and emotions. I think half of the book could have been left out, but that might just be me. I enjoyed it enough to keep in on my shelves for a rainy day ten years from now.

I really liked the essays at the beginning of each time period (yes, shocking that me - the most un-historically interested person in the world is saying this) - They helped set the stage for what the time period was like for GLBTQ teens. My heart cried out for many of the characters. I thought many of the stories would have made excellent novels. :)
