The writing is so beautiful, I found myself reading passages over and over, not to improve my understanding but just because it was so lyrical. The story is also absolutely beautiful.

I strongly recommend you get both the hard copy book AND the audiobook versions of "Wigfield" from your library, the audio version so you can hear Sedaris, Dinello, and Colbert read/perform what they wrote, the visual version so you can see the photos of the three authors done up as the characters they've created. The most memorable picture by far is on page 82, the one of Stephen Colbert done up as Raven the stripper. Yeah, Raven is a woman and Colbert is not, but DANG he pulls it off. The gist of the story is the oral history of a "town" that may be only slightly, actually legally a town facing a mass evacuation due to a dam meant to come down per the state government. The bulk of the book are interviews with townies reproduced verbatim because the narrator, ne'er-do-well "author" Russell Hokes, finds writing, you know, hard and stuff. Much of the humor comes from the characters not knowing or caring how incredibility inappropriate their actions are - you know, like in "Strangers with Candy."

A groundbreaking explanation of what we are referring to when we talk about our consciousness. Criticism is often levelled at Dennett for "explaining away" consciousness, but his point is to say that our folkpsychological intuitions about consciousness are wrong, and we have to rethink it all over if it's ever going to make sense. Good riddance to the cartesian theater.

Another audiobook. I enjoyed this book, although I think I might have gotten more out of it if I had actually read it. There are a number of minor characters, and I had trouble keeping them straight. I think if I could have seen their names written down I might have been able to differentiate between them. I liked the concept of the book: two people living in the same apartment building discover they are alike in their intellectual isolation and become friends. One of them is the concierge, who is in her forties, and the other is Renee has a tendency to

I love the phrasing and perspective in this book. My favorite line was "Their hands are kind" near the end of the book.

I'd shied away from this book for a long time thinking it was going to be a depressing read.. and it was, though there were definite moments of humour. I found myself growing angry when I read of Esther's depression and suicide attempts when she had so much going for her.. But at the same time, I could understand her 'bell jar' concept, and I think many of us have probably experienced similar feelings. Despite having options open to you, there are always limitations hemming you in, expectations and responsibilities based on gender, culture, family, finances... At some point we've all been the fly trapped under the bell jar..

i think vol 3 is still my favourite so far, but this is another great inclusion in this fantastic series! this series manages to be so extreme without it feeling contrived at all. that governor... omg... he is a SICK man!
