This book was a real page turner. The miracle of freedom, from the defeat of the Assyrians to destroy Judah, the Greeks victory of the Persians at Thermopylae and Salamis (Think of the movie 300), and the failure of the Mongols to conquer Europe in AD 1241 (interesting read on Genghis Khan), I have just mentioned three out of the seven that were my favorite, but the whole book is chalked full of history on these seven events, followed by a "What it Meant" in regards to freedom. I find myself anxious to read Chris and Ted Stewarts first book, Seven Miracles That Saved America.

I'm reading this book right now, and it's fascinating. As a psychology student (sort of), I'm particularly interested in how psychedelics work with our brains to help facilitate better therapy as well as to treat some medical problems. DMT is probably the most interesting of these chemicals, because it's something that is found in our own bodies (and also practically everywhere if you've read any Shulgin) yet its benefits have been downplayed like crazy. What I liked best about this book were all the case studies. It's too bad that it's currently illegal to conduct psychedelic research on consenting human subjects in the US; there's a lot that could be learned from this substance. What I found most fascinating was the recurring "theme" in a lot of the recorded experiences that seemed to involve what were described as alien encounters (Rick Strassman has a new book that talks about this aspect of the DMT and other psychedelic experiences a little more in-depth). Part of this is because I love anything to do with alien/UFO encounters; part of it is because it's interesting to me that so many people (who didn't know each other at all so there was little chance of collaborating on a story) described similar experiences. I highly recommend this book if you've got an open mind; this book will blow your mind!

There is lots to enjoy about this engaging western romance where our heroine has decided not not marry but finds herself pregnant and the naivety of her previous points of few on being a modern woman are harshly exposed. Our hero, because of his own up bringing, is both a realist and a feminist. He is great and I have a lot of compassion for our heroine as well. The details of pregnancy explored in this book adds depth as does the very true to history response to the heroine's out of wedlock condition. The growth of the characters is charming as is the love they come to share. This said I wish we had more couple time and less time spent in her former lovers spaces and that the conflict at the end of the book hadn't been based on a very dumb choice by the heroine and dumb reactions by the hero. It would have been an excellent book instead of just a good one in that case.

I love this series. It's easily one of the best graphic novel series that I've ever read. While not every aspect of the story is perfect, the good parts more than make up for the lacking moments. I honestly couldn't put it down the first time I read it and I've come back to re-read it a few times.

We were reading a chapter a day, and every was loving it....saying it was so funny and such. Then last week the two older boys (ages 11 and 10) said they felt it was too "baby" and could we PLEASE stop reading it. The younger two (ages 7 and 5) won't hear of stopping the book so we are now having Uncle Wiggily Wednesday and will read one chapter each Wednesday. The stories are quaint, with a moral lesson. They do start sounding the same after a bit so it's probably a good idea to spread them out some. You can definitely tell it was written 'back in the day'. Updated February 2013 - We're done! We stopped reading for a while but finally picked it up again and finished. The youngest two (now 9 and 6) told me they want to keep the book forever and asked me to read their future kids stories from it when they came over to visit. The older boys (both 12) stopped listening a long time ago.

This book is about so much more than gardening. Pollan examines many different philosophies regarding nature and makes them accessible while putting them all into perspective. I definitely re-thought my relationship to the natural world and recommend this book to anyone who would do the same.
