42 stories covering something like 4 decades of stories. The format is almost always the same. He is an older guy at a pub where he is a regular. Someone tells a story and he always says "that reminds me of my cousin Fred and the time he....". Some of the stories are ok - but certainly not his best work. He even says in the introduction that he basically contrived it as a foil for Jeeves and Wooster because he couldn't write every story about them.

Very interesting read. The chapters alternate between the fair (architecture, etc) and the true-crime portion (serial killer Holmes - who is horrific especially for the times). Highly recommended. Plus it made me wish there was still a World's Fair!

It's very inspiring if you're going through an eating disorder or even just a tough time in your life. I would highly recommend anyone to read this really because nobody really knows what it feels like to go through an eating disorder.

The book sails by on clever wording and a few laugh-out-loud observations, but like others, I found the main character less than engaging, and the story left me cold. Jeeves is nothing more than a literary device, someone to give the narrator an excuse to rattle off ideas. Cleverly written, and I may check out Ames' other novels, but ultimately shallow.

This book was really amazing. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I was addicted. This book can be so sad and I almost caught myself crying a few times (but I couldn't because i was at school lol). I did not know until the middle of the book that it took place in the 60s. This family is struggling with money and trying to keep up with the times all while having a blind sister, 8 kids, and hardly any jobs for the parents. This book has a sequal or two and I'm dying to read it. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a nice read.
