Homage to Catalonia was an incredible read. Sometimes the best explanation of war is what it is like to be there. Orwell attempts to immerse the reader in his experience of the Spanish Civil War: What it smells like at the front, what it feels like to be the butt of libelous propaganda, what it's like to shoot at a human being for the first time, what it's like to get shot yourself (he barely survives a bullet through his throat). A lot of the feelings he experienced seem to be a part of any war, and it is interesting to read while one's own country is at war. There is a desperate hope for everything to end, but as soon as a soldier leaves the front, something makes him/her desperately want to return. Orwell also makes a valiant effort to explain the very muddled politics of Spain (from his own biased perspective, as he regularly warns readers). The group that he happened to be fighting with was one of the most extreme of the revolutionary parties of Spain. Eventually they were accused of fighting for the Fascists by weakening the Popular Army via political division, even though politics seemed to matter very little on the front. Though Orwell is plainly anti-fascist, he picks every party manifesto on the side of the Spanish government to pieces. Orwell is critical of everything, especially the journalists who sit far away from the war writing stories about what they want to happen rather than what is happening. In one chapter, Orwell scours several newpapers of the time and finds very little truth in stories they tell. I like Orwell's style. His straightforward, non-flashy, non-cutesy, journalistic writing fits this genre well, and brings clarity to the events of the Spanish civil war. I have the feeling this book is gonna stick with me for a while.

I'm probably one of the few guys that has read this book. I might be of a smaller percentage of that group that absolutely loved the book and has read it again multiple times. There is something magical about this book. It isn't the time traveling. To me it's just a deus ex machina. The magic is in the characters and the way that she sets up these wonderful scenes that seem to resonate in all five senses and stick in our memories as if they were ours and not fiction. I can still remember Henry teaching his younger self how to steal, a younger Claire asking Henry to teach a high school rapist a lesson, and their first date in the Thai restaurant. The novel is a series of scenes strung together into a book. It's life.
I don't have a long review, but just a few things to say. When reading Vampire Academy, Rose had a pretty good idea of what was going on. Therefore, the reader had a pretty good idea. When reading from Sydney's POV, it's so strange! She knows hardly anything! The reader is kept out of the loop. I love the change in POV from Vampire Academy!

Review to come.

The play is a traditional farce, but with black humor of the sort typical of the theatre of the absurd. The characters are stock types, reminiscent of farce, and of Jonsonian humors.

Rather overrated, albeit somewhat interesting. First person novel with an autistic narrator. Not bad as a pleasure read, but hardly the work of brilliance people make it out to be.

I found this book fasinating. It's as if my souls emotions were in printed word. All the things I've always felt, but could never verbalize. I read this 10 years ago, and it has a permanent position next to my bed.

I didn't love this quite as much as I've loved many of Lipman's earlier novels. Still a good read, with great characters but a rather pat, fairy-tale ending, very un-Austen-like.

This book is helpful if you keep in the right perspective. I kept thinking how it could be dangerous in the hands of parents who want to live through their children. Yet, it was helpful to me as a parent in encouraging my children in the endeavors they already enjoy as well as for things that are difficult for them. If you want to be more skilled in anything, it will take deliberate practice over a long period of time. Saying to yourself, "I'm just not gifted at such-and-such" and then giving up is not a valid excuse. Not many of us is driven to sacrifice time and relationships to be a world-class performer, but we can learn by their example to play a better golf game or a become a better worker at our jobs.

Trent’in evine ikinci kez girmek.
