Edna Shinglebox and Louis “Marsh” Mellow are disaffected youth in the mid-1970s. When they are enrolled in a group therapy class at school they come to know each other and maybe help with each other’s emotional problems. Everything in this book is bizarre, from Marsh’s stories his and his father’s exploits with women to Edna’s visit to a local psychic. The descriptions are wacky and vivid and very representative of the time period and the youth scene. Marsh and Edna are fully-realized characters, if a bit over-dramatic. It is likely that the intended audience for this book no longer exists, but a modern teen reader might appreciate getting a sense of teens and their struggles in a prior time period.

This was my favorite of all the infinite crisis tie-ins I read during that one insane weekend in 2009. I just loved the idea of the team, and I fell in love with all of the characters right away. Imagine my happiness when I found out that there was an ongoing Secret Six series! It's still one of my favorite ongoings, for a good reason. It's funny and dark and twisted but Gail Simone simply tells great stories with the help of even greater characters who are genuinely interesting.

An avalanche in a high Colorado mining town buries 9 children. This book goes into the lives of the parents of these children. Interesting stories. They all end up in this little town and have virtually no interaction with each other. It is the avalance that forces them to "see" each other. I enjoyed it and felt the emotion of digging to uncover those children. The lesson of not being judgemental but being kind to eveyone comes through loud and clear. There was a sense of doom and sadness throughout however, that I didn't love. Guess characters who are really happy - even 1 - don't make a good story?
