This whole book is great simply because it contains the play "The Widow Ranter." Ranter (both the play and the character) is playful, lewd, bold, refreshing, and hilarious.

It's hard to believe, but the first time I read Order of the Phoenix it was my least favorite book in the series thus far. In my defense, it was also the first book I actually had to wait for, and at the time I had no inkling of what was to come in books 6 and 7. I still am not a huge fan of Harry's behavior in book 5, but now I realize that it is entirely appropriate to his age and also to the circumstances. In my annual re-read, my interest and involvement is always brought to a whole other level when I reach book 5. The themes are darker, the characters infinitely more complex, and the plotting is meticulous and clever.

Harkness does a good job of laying the groundwork for an interesting series involving creatures: witches, vampires, and daemons. The daemons are relatively unexplored in this story which does leave a bit of an empty feeling in that corner of the story. The middle of the book stays too long in the twilight-ish- "o, I'm a witch in love with a vampire/ forbidden love" scenario. it does set up the second half of the book nicely and the need for three of each type of creature to come together to solve the mystery of the mysterious book, Ashmole 782. I'm interested enough to look forward to the sequel.

I started out really liking this book and I liked it to the end; however, by the end I was kind of annoyed by this guy. He came off as being irresponsible to his family for the sake of others. He also seemed to feel that nothing bad could happen to him so he put himself into dangerous situations - which is something I find annoying. I do recommend this book because it was well written and shows what one person can do when they put their mind into acheiving a goal.

I wanted to like this book.I tried. I really did. But it was so difficult for me to read it. At the beginning everything was excellent and just as a thought I found myself a new favorite series, things started to fall apart. The biggest reason because of which I had such a difficult time with this read was the BDSM part. I can tolerate this kind of erotic relations, I can even find them appealing, but only when they are i small dozes. While reading The Vampire Queen's Servant, at some moments I had the sharp need to throw this book and run away from all the things that Lyssa was doing to Jacob. I do understand that she is an alpha. She always has to be in command. Always has to dominate and that is the only way. But at some times I swear I just wanted to leave the book, go find my teddy bear and craw under the covers. Still, apart of this, I cannot not say that the way his book was written is amazing. The characters were definitely something new ( at least for me) and the way Joey W. Hill described the tension between Jacob and Lyssa was amazing. It was interesting to observe the way they both want to dominate and submit to one another at the same time. The end of the book was the perfect thing. After all those tough scenes it was heartwarming to finally see confess their feelings to one another.
