It was pretty good.

It has so much information and yet is also missing so much. Rather too academic, as if today's systems came from there, exclusively. Written mostly about the authors and from their perspective. Worse, I am not in it anywhere, although many of my former colleagues are :-(/.

This is an interesting read about what groups of Americans donate the most to charity - I have to admit that there were few surprises with the results but it was advantageous that Mr. Brooks had more than ample data and analysis to back it all up.

One of the most dense books I've ever read, City on the Lake is rigorous but quite excellent. Born and raised in Buffalo, with most of my family still living there, I've had no complete understanding of or appreciation for the City's depth of struggles, sacrifice, and perseverance until now. Goldman has done his research, without a doubt, and carefully and respectfully presents all sides of the issues. Although there are times when his delivery is rather "thick", Goldman compliments his historical thoroughness with beautiful poetic descriptions of the city's landscape and enthusiastic glimpses into the hearts, souls, and character of Buffalonians. Many times I smiled, smirked, or grinned...and a few times I laughed out loud. That is MY city he is talking about, and he hit the nail on the head. :) I recommend this book to anyone, whether you are from Buffalo or elsewhere. Sure, there are specifics that we who are from there will understand better than those of you who are not. But aside from that, if you have a love of history, political affairs, society and the struggles of its people, or the evolution of communities as the global economy changes, you will enjoy this book. Not only that, you'll learn a lot, as I just did.

This book surprised me in so many ways. I love it when an author draws me into his or her story and makes me FEEL so much. It's a rare thing, but it happened for me with Okay For Now. I laughed and I cried. I stayed up late and went to bed with sweet tears in my eyes. This is one of those books where you want to hug the main character and say thanks to the author for writing such a terrific novel. This is Doug's story. He is a middle school student who moves to a new town with his family. He has a pretty crappy home life, with a father and an older brother who are bullies, another brother who is serving in Vietnam, and a mom who is sweet but stands up to no one. He has no friends, and his teachers and other adults believe he's a loser because he looks like one. Then, things slowly start to change. Doug makes a friend, adults and teachers start to see him for who he really is, and he is given a chance to be something more. I loved Doug's story. He starts by believing nothing good will come to him because that's the way it has always been. But then I felt joy at his surprise when good things really did happen to him. Like when he learned he could draw. And when he started to feel like he was worthy. Even though he was often put down, Doug was also never afraid to fight back. I applauded his courage, especially standing up to the coach, who was mean just for the sake of it. And I loved his willingness to believe that others may also be more than what THEY seem. I was especially drawn in by the way Doug interjects his thoughts to the reader into the narration: "I was smiling like all get-out. If you were paying attention back there, you'd know why." Doug, I was paying attention, and I did know why. And I had tears in my eyes because of it, too. This was a beautiful book, one of the best I have read in a long time. Don't let the fact that it's a young adult novel throw you off. Although I got this from the library, I plan on buying my own copy to read again. It was just that good.

I'm halfway through this book. I'm not in love with the way its written -- it's dense and poorly organized. The information doesn't seem to be delivered in the linear fashion I want for a book thats meant to be read through and not just referenced. The preface even goes so far as to say "Read section 1, then section 3, then look back at section 2 and then read section 4 if you want". However --- The information itself is gold. This book really unlocks the mystery of how, when and why to use a template instead of traditional inheritance/virtual function. For that I am indebted to it.

Loved it! A must read if you're interested in France or Showbiz. If you enjoyed this book I'd recomend Stafford's husband's book A Town Like Paris. It's a fantastic read and it's so interesting to hear about their relationship from the other point of view.

I did love this book. I must say that I agree with many of my friends and wish this book was not marketed to young adults due to the attitude about anti-marriage and no-committment lovers (although the sexual content was brief and vague). I loved the concept of Gracelings, although not original, Cashore put a nice twist on it with the eyes and belonging to the king only. I liked the love story between Po and Katsa. I love that Po's grace so perfectly fit Katsa's, allowing him to understand her despite her inablility to communicate and allowing him to keep up with and challenge such a strong woman, yet be gentle and kind. I also felt the villian Lek was great. I was intrigued by someone whose grace could sway minds even when his words were passed as rumors. I still don't understand how Bitterblue finally broke his spell on her. I did not want the book to end and wanted more adventures with Katsa and Po. I hope the author writes more about these two and and world of the seven kingdoms.
