Anne Stuart wrote a fantastic period piece with Angels Wings! Set in 1937 Evanston (just outside Chicago) this is one of those books that hooks you from the first chapter and you can't seem to put it down until you are done. Angela Hogan is a pilot. One of the few female pilots of the 1930's era who is making a living with it running a small but reputable air freight company left to her after her father is killed by the Chicago mafia for bootlegging their alcohol across the border to Canada. Angela along with her half sister Constance, have been surviving and somewhat thriving during a time when some people didn't have jobs or even a place to live. However her livelihood is threatened when its found that one of her employee's is actually a spy for her competitor, a loud and lazy man who is still living off his accidental "hero" status from WW1. In an effort to turn around her business before it tanks, she hires Jack Clancy, a war hero and daredevil pilot. Jack Clancy is a rogue, plain and simple. He reminds me of a cross between Diana Palmer's alpha hero's (minus the meanness) and Rhett Butler. Oozing charisma and smoldering passion along with a flirtatious eye, Jack takes the job hoping to earn some cash to bring his plane up from South America, where he has it in storage from a previous job. He makes it known that while he finds "Angel" as he calls Angela (knowing she doesn't like it) beautiful, he's not a one-woman man and he isn't settling down - ever. I absolutely loved the real American history of the 1930's meshing with a classic romance. Angela reminds me very much of a Katherine Hepburn type heroine. She's tough and she's whip smart but she also has a tender side and a vulnerability about her that Jack can't look away from, nor does he. I also loved the language of the book, which is the language of the times. "Angel", "Toots" and "doll" were all endearments Jack used for Angela. They smoked Lucky Strike cigarettes, which you almost never find in a romance anymore, especially the heroine! They listened to radio dramas and they read classic cult magazines like "Detective Magazine" and "Western Love Stories". A few times Angela cursed (hell and damn) and the men around her were appalled and actually called her on it, telling her to 'watch your language missy'. (I just loved that) All in all, not only a fantastic read but an educational read and took me back to a time when men were men and women were on the cusp of something greater than themselves. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
