This book... I don't even know where to begin! There's so much I loved about it and so much I didn't like. I didn't like the justice given to the one that killed Suzie- hardly anybody even knew it happened at all. I loved, however, Alice Sebold's take on heaven in this book. The roommates, the different heavens that everyone has, the scents of every heaven... I didn't like what happened towards the end with Suzie and Ray. I didn't understand how it happened, why it happened, or why Suzie would ever ask a thing like that from Ray. I liked the style- little sentimental things added here and there, like memories of games and toys that Suzie used to play with, such as the monopoly shoe that both Buckley and Jack want to keep with them because it used to be Suzie's piece. I didn't like how Suzie's mother reacted, with a police officer and a new job far away. I did like, however twisted it is to like this, the depth and creepyness of the murderer. His obsession with building huts and tents and tiny buried rooms in which to commit his crimes was a detail I found disturbing but interesting at the same time, as well as his attempts to stop himself from being who he was with help from neighborhood pets. I liked how there were so many characters and they were described in a way that didn't leave you confused and wondering who's who and which people are really important to the story. I think this book is a fabulous start for Alice Sebold and I expect to find many more great books from her.

This extensively researched history of the Comanche should be required reading for every American. Gwynne manages to transform what could be an exhaustively detailed dry account into a gripping tale of historical scale. Not for the squeamish, Gwynne pulls no punches in his account - a major plus as far as I am concerned as the truth in this chapter should not be edited. The book contains tons of fascinating fact. For instance, did you know that Buffalo Hump (born ca. late 1790s to early 19th century — died 1870) was a Native American War Chief of the Penateka band of the Comanche Indians. His Nʉmʉ tekwapu (Comanche) name, properly transliterated, was Po-cha-na-quar-hip which meant "erection that won't go down" ? Or, that Isa-tai ("Wolf's Vulva" c.1840 — c.1890) was a Comanche warrior and medicine man of the Quahadi band. Originally named Quenatosavit (White Eagle), after the debacle at Adobe Walls he was known as Isa-tai which translates as "wolf's vulva" or "coyote vagina" ? Gwynne uses the life of Quanah Parker and Quanah's family as his focus to tie the epic saga together and provide a bigger than life character the reader can bond with. The Parker family could have their own book and the story of Quanah Parker is uniquely apropos as a microcosm of the larger story of the Native American tribes. If I could recommend only one book and it couldn't be any Brautigan or Vonnegut or Dick or Steinbeck or Robbins or McMurtry plus it had to be non-fiction then this would be it! :)

** spoiler alert ** A bit slow but enjoyable. It continues after where Hunted left off. Zoey is having trouble with her being a reincarnation of A-ya. Zoey feels an attraction to Kalona and struggles to fight it and like usual she has boy problems. She has an imprint Heath, a warrior bond with Stark and her boyfriend Erik and on top of it her attraction to Kalona. Just utter chaos! Well she ends up breaking up with Erik and sort of dates Heath although she feels that Stark is more than a friend to her. The ending disappoints me because it's a frkn cliffhanger ending! D< But Heath dies and I was like HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA because I don't like him. Hehehe. And Zoey's spirit has drifted off and just her body (shell) is left lying on earth. Well interesting as it switched from Zoey's POV into many people's. Really liked it overall though. :D

If you don't want to be incredibly frustrated, pissed off, and feel hopeless about humanity today, don't read this book. It's a compelling read about the case and the history and police politics behind Adam Walsh's disappearance in the 80s. I guarantee you that it will make your stomach churn at times, hug your babies tighter, and want to fly down to FL and kick some ass.

Spit-out-your-drink funny, drolly offensive, and utterly charming. Written with perfect comedic pitch, it's considerably better than any movie he's made since Divine's passing.

I enjoyed the fiction part of the book very much. It made me appreciate the fact that Jesus was human, had human emotions, and loved people as God and as a human being. The book also got me to do some of my own research, and memorize the list of the apostles.

I'm a huge fan of the series of books co-authored by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. I also enjoyed Child's first solo novel, but Preston's The Codex left me wondering if Child is the heart of their writing duo (although Child's Utopia certainly had some plot holes). In The Codex, Maxwell Broadbent is a multi-millionaire who is dying of cancer. Instead of simply leaving his fortune to his three sons, who were never able to live up to his unreasonably high expectations, he decides to seal himself away in a tomb with all his belongings. He leaves them a message instructing them to come find him if they want to claim their inheritance, sending them on a perilous journey through the jungles of Honduras. It sounds really intriguing, but the entire book seemed to be one long description of boating and walking through the jungle. It was reminiscent of Child and Preston's Thunderhead, where a group of explorers take a perilous journey through the Southwestern deserts to find ancient ruins, but Thunderhead did a much better job of A) making the journey interesting, and B) devoting a large chunk of the book to what happened once they reached the ruins. I'd recommend it to Child and Preston fans, just for completeness's sake, but if you've never read them before, I definitely suggest starting with their first novel, Relic, instead. I won't write off Preston's solo novels yet, as I have his Tyrannosaur Canyon sitting on my bookshelf, and I'm hoping it's better than this one.

I came across this book at the library - I had wanted to read more of Smith after reading a Tree Grows in Brooklyn, but never made a point of getting my hands on anything. I'm glad I did, although I'm having a hard time with a review because I just want to compare them. I guess I'll think it over some more, although it might not be a great sign that it doesn't quite stand alone....
