"What they had both thought was safety proved to have been the camouflage of an enemy who works in terms of friendship, trust, and pity." I really enjoy reading Graham Greene. I feel like there is a lot in common with his stories and flannery o'connor's stories. They both have an ability to highlight tensions and breakdowns in human relationships. There was a lot of good insight into human nature I thought, and despite the flaws of many of the characters I found myself rooting for them. For me, this book showed the damaged we as human are capable of inflicting on each other and on ourselves in the name of peace or happiness. Interesting read.

I read everything. I don't stick to any genres. I liked this one better than the earlier JP book I read. She clearly did a ton of strong research, which makes the story pop, but she sometimes overdoes it with giving us info on Asperger's. The thing that annoyed me most, though, was that the brother, Theo's story, was some of the most interesting to explore, and yet, there is no exploration of what his feelings, culpability, or punishment might have been, which seems like a huge hole to me. The mother character sometimes did things that I didn't quite buy her doing, too. Other than that, the suspense was good, and I read it quickly, wanting to know what happens. But it did feel like we were working up to some big disclosure that never actually materialized.

This book was hard for me to get through. It was really slow and I eventually put it down permanently. Then I finished it on CD and I like it a lot better on audio. It's amazingly written, though more of a special interest due to the slowness. Some gross content, too.

I remember my mom read this a while back, right after it came out, and she raved for a while about these amazing men and what they survived. It took me a while to read it myself, but I found myself raving on to other people about how these guys willed themselves to survive this horrible ordeal, how long can people wear the same clothes (years, apparently), how miserable it would be to be sleeping for a year in a reindeer sleeping bag that's shedding hair and rotting around you, how would it be to live on seals and penguins... it's an incredible story. the pictures are wonderful. It makes me want to read Shackleton's book, South, and maybe some of the other accounts by the survivors.
