Specifically, Chant (BlazeVOX [books:], 2008) “is structured by a chant, written in square notation,” according to the promo sheet, and the “characters...are identified by the notes they represent on the scale.” Thus, instead of full names, the characters are known as A, B, C, and other notes.... I kept rolling my eyes with Wulfgar in this one... His struggle to find himself and to try and come back to his old self felt a little dragged out. I still enjoyed the book and was glad to see some conclusion with him.

i have mixed feelings about this book. there are five or six main characters, three of which are brilliant. the rest are shadows, outlines. one of the characters is described as a dental student with a fear of sharp objects, despite the bony skininess of his girlfriend. this is such a strange description that there needs to be so much attention played to making it believable. but there really isn't... you are just told these things are true and never really made to believe it. one of the other characters walks around with a spoon hanging from her hair. but that works, because you are shown her evolution from a suicidal and anxiety prone college student, to somewhat mystical chocolate maker. her descriptions of scenes are also wonderful, truly placing you in the, often surreal, moment. but the plot is somewhat nonexistent. i finished the book with a sense of disappointment. somewhere in there, something happened. but i'm not sure when or where. i think i want to try some of shafak's translated works and see if her descriptions can find a plot. maybe part of the problem was switching to english.

I think if I hadn't seen the rave reviews this book got, I probably would have given this more stars. But I was quite disappointed with the whole story. I found the pace of the book so slow. Reading the first few chapters was a bit of a chore and I skimmed a lot. Another reason for the low rating is most likely due to the fact that I read this book in the wake of reading the Kate Daniels series and the fast paced action packed world Ilona Andrews created is still in my head making this book a bit dull. I also didn't really like the heroes either (Adam or Sam) which kinda kills the romance aspect. Finally, Patricia Briggs' werewolf world where the women are all submissive is an annoying fact that taints the whole book for me. I'll try the next book because I want to feel what others felt when they gave this series a high rating.

Genel karakter sayısı birkaç çok fazla olmasına rağmen beni ilgilendirecek kadar iyi genel ve hikaye biraz atlar. Hikayenin birkaç unsurunu (ve karakterini) belli noktalarda biraz daha fazla görmek isterdim ama yine de kitabın doğası birçok farklı yöne gidebilirdi. Sonuçta bir kitap zaman kaybı düşünün vermedi ama bir ben orada inanılmaz bir hayat değiştirici olarak koymak istiyorsunuz - ki çoğu zaman iyi para cezası!
